Eteaching Endorsement Overview

The WMU Eteaching Endorsement Program is designed to provide WMU staff and instructors with the knowledge, skills and ability to effectively design, develop and manage teaching and learning experiences facilitated through the use of a variety of e-learning technologies and methodologies. This six-week, hands-on program will introduce and be based on contemporary e-learning best practices, instructional design techniques, methods for ensuring quality, multi-modal/sensory learning object development, and accessibility considerations and compliance. Participants will develop, at a minimum, a web-enhanced course that can be utilized in support of face-to-face instruction.

Week 1 – Introduction to Elearning
(2 hours)

  • Elearning at WMU – Policies, Procedures and Resources
  • Elearning Standards
  • The Instructional Design Process
  • Best Practices
  • Course Management System Overview and Course Demonstration
  • Course Tools and System Capabilities
  • Activity: Accessing the Course Management System and User Sandboxes

Week 2 – Course and Instructional Design (2 hours)

  • Storyboarding Overview
  • Developing Objectives and Measureable Outcomes
  • Identifying Learning Objects, Exercises and Activities
  • Virtual Learning Communities: Collaboration, Communication and Interactivity
  • Activity: Creating Measurable Outcomes

Week 3 – Course Development (2 hours)

  • Navigation Structures
  • Learning Object Development
  • Accessibility, Multi-Modal/Sensory Learners
  • Content Presentation
  • Activity: Establishing a Navigation/Organization Structure
  • Activity: Experiencing Assistive Technology
  • Activity: Developing and Incorporating Learning Objects

Week 4 – Evaluation, Assessment Tools and Techniques (2 hours)

  • Learning Outcome Assessment Strategies
  • Assessment Tools – Quizzes, Self-Assessment, Exams, Rubrics and Inline Activities
  • Activity: Developing an Assessment Plan
  • Activity: Tracking Outcome Achievement
  • Activity: Creating Three Assessment Items

Week 5 – Advanced Development & Quality Assurance (2 hours)

  • Personalized Learning Paths
  • Quality Assurance – Pedagogical, Technical,  Accessibility, Copyright
  • Activity: Reviewing Your Course- Checklist Application

Week 6 – Managing and Facilitating Your Course (2 hours)

  • Discussion Participation Strategies
