VISITING WMU & the Pilot Plants

 

Directions & Maps

The WMU Pilot Plants are housed in three different buildings, all located on the campus of Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. The Plants are loacted off of US-131, north of I-94. Specific plant directions, maps, and GPS locations are below.

 

Paper Plant, McCracken Hall

  1. On US-131 (north of I-94), take exit #36A, Stadium Drive.
    • From US-131 south, turn right onto Stadium Drive.
    • From US-131 north, exit #36A merges onto Stadium Drive.
  2. Continue to Oliver Street (fifth traffic light after US-131) and make a left turn at the Oliver Street light.
  3. At the 3-way stop sign turn right onto Western Ave. and yield to any pedestrian traffic.
  4. At the next traffic light, turn left onto W. Michigan Ave. You will pass through another traffic light and a stop sign at a pedestrian walkway.
  5. At the next stop sign you can see McCracken Hall at 10 o'clock. The Paper Pilot Plant is located inside McCraken Hall on the ground floor.
  6. To park, turn left and just about halfway down McCracken Hall, and just past a set of stairs, a parking space will appear designated for paper pilot plant customers only. Please park in front of a dock door and plant staff will give you a parking pass to hang on your rearview mirror. If this spot is occupied, park in the same area and the plant staff will direct you to an alternative parking space.
 

Coating Plant

  1. On US-131 (north of I-94), take exit #36A, Stadium Drive.
    • From US-131 south, turn right onto Stadium Drive.
    • From US-131 north, exit #36A merges onto Stadium Drive.
  2. Turn right at the first traffic light onto Drake Road.
  3. At the next traffic light, go straight through and enter WMU's Parkview Campus.
  4. Turn right onto Engineering Drive West, the fourth driveway.
  5. Just past the square gray building on your left, turn left, drive to the end and park along the back edge of the larger gray building (no brick) and park.
  6. Ring the green door bell located to the left of the dock door. Pilot plant personnel will provide you with a parking pass to hang on the rearview mirror of your car.
 

Printing Plant

  1. On US-131 (north of I-94), take exit #36A, Stadium Drive.
    • From US-131 south, turn right onto Stadium Drive.
    • From US-131 north, exit #36A merges onto Stadium Drive.
  2. Continue 2.2 miles. Turn left onto Howard Street, the fourth traffic light.
  3. Turn right onto West Michigan Ave.
  4. At the traffic circle, take the third exit and stay on West Michigan Ave.
  5. Turn right at Buckhout Ave. The printing pilot plant is on the right, the back end of Welborn Hall.
  6. Park in any open space along the side of this building. The spaces are designated as "R" parking and plant personnel will provide you with a parking pass to hang on the rearview mirror of your car.
 

FROM KALAMAZOO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

  1. Leave the airport by turning right onto Portage Road.
  2. At the light just beyond highway I-94 overpass, turn right and merge onto west bound I-94.
  3. At Exit #74, turn north onto US-131. At the next Exit #36A, turn east onto Stadium Drive.
  4. Continue to your destination by following the plant-specific directions above.
