Students and faculty in the news

Ramón S. Barthelemy has had a paper published in Physical Review Special Topics - Physics Education Research, a journal of the American Physical Society. The title is How do they get here?: Paths into physics education research.

Phyllis Haugabook Pennock recently attended the weeklong Sandra K. Abell Institute for Doctoral Students in Washington, D.C.; she was also interviewed along with several other scholars and mentors.

MISE doctoral student Ramón S. Barthelemy organized and presided over a session titled "Gender and Sexual Diversity in Physics" at the Summer 2013 American Association of Physics Teachers Conference held in Portland Oregon July 13th-17th. The session brought together speakers from various academic institutions and the American Institute of Physics to discuss Gender and Sexual Minority (GSM) issues in physics. This ranged from a talk on the K-12 classroom to issues of working physicists. Please see the AAPT program for more information.

Four MISE graduate students recently presented posters at the 12th Biennial Meeting of the International History, Philosophy & Science Teaching Group (IHPST), which was held 19-22 June 2013 in Pittsburgh, PA: Aekam Barot "A Lesson Plan Using the Discovery of the Genetic Material of the Cell to Develop Student Understanding of the Nature of Science"; Janice Fulford "The Portrayal of Industrial Melanism in American College General Biology Textbooks "; Joseph Lane  "Using the History of Research in Plate Tectonics to Help Students Better Appreciate the Nature of Science"; and, Cody Williams "A Method for Improving Student Understanding of the Nature of Science Through the Use of the History of Gregor Mendel's Pea Experiments." Dave Rudge, their mentor, also presented a paper, “H.B.D. Kettlewell’s Pioneering Use of Radioactive Tracers to Study Insect Migration, 1949-1955”. He and Janice Fulford also concluded their service as Past President and Student Member of the Council during the business meeting.

Congratulations are in order for Caitlin Callahan, Katherine (Kate) Rowbotham, and Jeff Barney! Their presentations (above) were judged to be among the top in the graduate student oral presentation category. Caitlin won the overall GSA Best Paper (oral) award for her talk; Kate won an Honorable Mention for her talk; and Jeff won an Honorable Mention for his talk entitled “Do our Grading Practices Send the Right Message?”

Phyllis Pennock, one of our MISE doctoral students, recently attended the annual meeting of the American Education Research Association (San Francisco) where she participated in a roundtable discussion entitled "(Re)Considering Science and Math Education: Identities and Purpose." Her presentation was titled, "The Missing Link in Scientific Argumentation: Intersecting Identities of African-American Girls for Scientific Literacy."

MISE graduate student research and teaching award winners were honored at the recent University awards ceremony. Jacinta Mutambuki received a MISE research award, and Andrea Marie-Kryger Bierema received a MISE teaching award. Dr. Reneé Schwartz is their mentor. Chaiphat Plybour (Yod) received a MISE teaching award as well. He is pictured with his mentor, Dr. David Schuster.

Ramón Barthelemy presented a talk at the annual Nuclear Data for Science and Technology Conference (ND2013) held in New York, New York. ND2013 is the largest nuclear physics conference in the world and hosted its first session on nuclear physics education. In this session Ramón gave a talk on preliminary results examining the pathways of women into physics. The talk was well received and part of a two day examination on various topics including nuclear decay, retention in the nuclear sciences, and public understanding of radiation. Ramón works on his research under two MISE faculty, Dr. Charles Henderson and Dr. Megan Grunert.

 

Ramón Barthelemy has also recently been awarded the WMU Department of Gender and Women's Studies Gwen Raaberg Teaching Award. This award recognizes his dedication creating and instructing the junior level course "Race, Gender, and Science." His class studied the intricacies of the relationships between the development of science and the people who created and conducted the scholarship. Included in this were readings on historical figures, discussions of the contributions of women to science, and an in-class science experiment.

Dr. Angela Calabrese-Barton, Dr. Barot and graduate studentsa professor of teacher education at Michigan State University, visited the Mallinson Faculty and Students on February 15th to share her experiences becoming a science education researcher. Her talk put focus on the importance of students pursuing research they believe in and reading deeply within cross-disciplinary literature. She also discussed how she used funding opportunities to conduct unique research and develop her career as a scholar. This event was put together by WWEB and funded by the Student Assessment Fee and GSAC.

______________________Dr. Barot and graduate students

Dr. Bal Barot, Lake Michigan College, visited WMU to discuss his experiences teaching chemistry at the community college level for over 30 years and spoke about being faculty at the community college level. He also touched on experiences as an international student seeking a domestic position, and his insights from being a Fulbright Scholar. MISE and WWEB at WMU sponsored the October 19th event in Wood Hall, and it was attended by graduate students from a variety of science and science education programs.

Congratulations to William Mamudi, who is working as an instructor at Calvin College in Grand Rapids.

Charles Henderson recently received a new NSF grant, “Collaborative Research: Sustainable Diffusion of Research-Based Instructional Strategies: A Rich Case Study of SCALE-UP”.  The  NSF has awarded WMU $190,852 for the period 9/1/12 to 8/31/15. This is one of three collaborative proposals, with total project funding of $599,991. Collaborating researchers are M. Dancy, University of Colorado Boulder, and B. Beichner, North Carolina State University.

Dr. Marcia Fetters is pleased to report that, on June 13, a press conference was held at the Governor's office to announce the new cohort of the Woodrow Wilson Teaching Fellowship program. That evening, the WMU provost hosted a gathering at the Fetzer Center, to celebrate the first cohort completing the requirements for certification, and to introduce the new group.  Alex Enyedi, Van Cooley, and Steve Zeibarth were able to attend, along with superintendents from partner districts, Dr. Rice from KPS, and Dr. Hicks from BCPS (Dr. Seawood from BHAS was not able to attend).  Administrators and mentor teachers also joined in the very special night celebrating the first year of the program. Charles Henderson was the ERM Distinguished Lecturer at the American Society of Engineering Education National Meeting, San Antonio, TX, June 13, 2012. His presentation was titled, "The Challenges of Spreading and Sustaining Research-Based Instruction in Undergraduate STEM."  The Educational Research and Methods (ERM) Division Distinguished Lecture provides an opportunity to hear thought-provoking new ideas by notable speakers, usually from outside the engineering education community.

Congratulations to Jacinta Mutambuki and Jeff Barney. Their research poster was one of the winners at the recent 6th Annual WMU Poster Day and Creative competition. Their study was, "Science Faculty Grading of Quantitative Problems: Are Their Values Consistent with Their Practice?"

Beginning April 1, 2012, Dr. Charles Henderson was appointed as the senior editor of the journal Physical Review Special Topics - Physics Education Research. This is the top international journal in the field of physics education research, with an Impact Factor of 2.302.  It is part of a series of 11 ‘physical review’ journals run by the American Physical Society (APS), which are among the most prestigious international journals for the publication of physics research.
