Enlist: Joining Others in a Profession

Why become a science teacher in a middle school setting? No other age level is more important; these are the years when adolescents crystallize their beliefs about themselves and firm up their self-concepts, their philosophies of life and their values—the things that are the ultimate determinants of their futures. Teachers have an enormous impact on student decisions that direct their behavior and how they view the world.

What are the current and future prospects for employment? In recent years, Michigan has faced critical shortages in the number of qualified teachers available to teach science at the middle school level. Elementary teachers are abundantly available, but too few of them have strong subject matter preparation in science. This proposed program will provide the strong science background needed to fill the void.
