Equip: Preparation for a Career
How does the E3
program of training differ from traditional programs for middle school science
training? WMU currently has programs specific to the preparation of elementary
and secondary level teachers. Though both programs are excellent means for obtaining
the necessary skills for teaching in either the elementary or secondary settings,
neither fully addresses the unique needs of middle school teachers. Middle school
science teaching requires a conceptual understanding of general science principles
spanning many disciplines and a thorough understanding of the adolescent mind.
Traditionally, elementary programs only provide a minimal exposure to science
content, while secondary programs focus strongly in one discipline. The E3
program of study attempts to remove the limitations of traditional training programs
by providing a suggested program of instruction that complements the traditional
elementary education training at WMU. Enrollees receive a liberal arts degree
that will lead to a middle school science endorsement with a strong emphasis on
the sciences.
