Adriana Undreiu--Institute Teaching Effectiveness Award (Graduated December 2004)
In addition to receiving this award, on October 21, 2004, Adriana Undreiu, Ph.D. student in the Institute, had an opportunity to travel to Chicago to participate in meetings regarding the Science Achievement in 8th Grade NSF grant project. Ms. Undreiu met with individuals from Illinois Institute for Technology to discuss how to go about gathering specific research information from 8th grade students and determine if inquiry instruction or direct instruction is more efficient for improving their science knowledge and science attitudes. The objective of the trip was to compare the Chicago Public Schools curriculum and the Kalamazoo Public Schools curriculum and to design specific science units.
Ms. Undreiu explains that she gained much from the Chicago trip. The experience of working with Dr. Norman G. Lederman and Dr. Judy S. Lederman, well known in the field of science education, as well as being authors of science books, was a wonderful learning opportunity. She took away from the experience a sense of community. Ms. Undreiu also said that working with and developing further friendships with her colleagues was very rewarding.
