Enrollment will be accepted for the summer session WMU student health insurance program from April 15 to May 17.
To purchase the policy:
Coverage begins May 3, no matter what day you purchase during open enrollment.
Students must have at least one summer credit hour at WMU to qualify to purchase. Students who are simply renewing their spring insurance for summer do not require any summer credit hours.
If you lose health insurance from a different source in the middle of a semester, contact the Sindecuse Health Center Student Insurance Office to see if you qualify for a mid-semester enrollment in the WMU program.
Financial Aid Students- if you receive enough financial aid to cover the semesterly insurance premium, and would like to use that money to purchase insurance, please email cindy.clegg@wmich.edu. Students who have signed up for WMU's monthly automatic payment plan may choose to have the insurance premium charged to their university account. Those requests should also be sent to cindy.clegg@wmich.edu.
Enrollment using your GA/TA benefit subsidy is only done at the beginning of the fall and/or spring semesters. Do not enroll on the Aetna website. Go to www.wmich.edu/grad for info and to enroll in the insurance program.
Health insurance is mandatory while studying in the US, and is automatically purchased for you and charged to your university account. Your tuition bill will show the insurance fee. The $1529 fee that appeared on your student account was for spring and summer insurance.
Students not already covered by the plan will see a $736 insurance fee which covers summer I and II.
Waiver requests can be submitted online by going to aetnastudenthealth.com, select WMU from the list of schools, then select "International Student Waiver" from the menu. Be sure to have all your private policy information before you begin the waiver process. The waiver deadline is May 17.
The 2012–13 requirements for a private insurance are:
In order to match the WMU Basic student insurance policy for waiver purposes, the following requirements would need to be met:
Minimum of $100,000 coverage per injury or sickness (including hospitalization, surgery, mental health and pregnancy). (Beginning fall 2013, this requirement will be $500,000.)
All dependent enrollment is done online at the Aetna Student Health website. Domestic students will include dependents when they enroll themselves. International students and graduate assistants will use the appropriate form specific for your status.
Sindecuse Health Center claims will be submitted directly to our student insurance company. Our policy is a member of the Aetna PPO network. If you need to see a specialist (with a referral from Sindecuse), or if you are farther than 25 miles from campus, you can access the DocFind section on the Aetna Student Health website to locate a participating provider. Insurance payments for preferred providers vs. out-of-network providers are explained in the student insurance policy brochure found online.
