Elmination of Trays

<< back

The halls adopting the elimination of trays are Burnham Dining Service, Davis Dining Service and Valley I Dining Service. Given the larger scatter system at Hoekje/Bigelow Dining Service and Valley II Dining Service, these dining halls will continue to offer trays at this time.

The benefits of eliminating trays are many:

Environmental reasons: Reduce solid waste to landfills and organic waste processed by water treatment facilities when uneaten food is disposed of with a garbage disposal.

Cost savings: Food costs are rising by 6 - 9 % and fuel costs are soaring. Eliminating waste can help to reduce overall costs.

Avoid overeating: A healthy approach is eating to appetite and not overdoing portion sizes. By going back to obtain additional portions the likelihood of overeating is reduced. Students can still help themselves to desired portion, nothing from the menu or offerings is being eliminated.
