Position Description:

EFIS is looking for dynamic individuals to work as classroom teachers (Servant Leader Interns) for a CDF Freedom Schools® afterschool program at Spring Valley Elementary School. The program is offered on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 3:30-7 p.m. and is scheduled to end late May 2017. Enrichment and service learning activities will also take place one Saturday per month. This is a 15-20 hour position and the hourly rate is $10.

The right individual will have early childhood experience and/or experience working in a K-2nd grade educational environment; on track to work with K-12 youth and their families; and, can demonstrate creativity. This is ideal for college-aged individuals pursuing careers in social work, psychology, teaching, and criminal justice. Additionally individuals could use this experience as an internship/service learning opportunity. Although teaching experience is helpful it is not necessary-we will train the right people!

Educating for Freedom In Schools (EFIS) is a 501c(3) youth development organization focused on providing high-quality, culturally relevant programming for all children and families throughout Kalamazoo County. EFIS is the Sponsoring Agency for the Kalamazoo CDF Freedom Schools® summer and afterschool programs. CDF Freedom Schools® is a national, best practice model that is focused on literacy, social justice, health/wellness, intergenerational leadership development, and family engagement. Selected individuals will have priority, if interested, to work as a summer Servant Leader Intern for the CDF Freedom Schools® summer program which will take place for 6 weeks in 2017.

Scope of Duties:

The following are duties particular to Servant Leader Interns:

  • Work independently to oversee 10 students (e.g. scholars) in the classroom
  • Develop weekly lesson plans
  • Provide daily lessons, homework, and tutoring support
  • Assess and monitor the reading, writing, critical thinking, and behavior of students
  • Communicate bi-weekly with parents as needed in order to keep them abreast of their child’s progress
  • Other duties as assigned
