Statement From Board Chair Miller on Recent Athletic Issue

The Western Michigan University Board of Trustees is in complete accord with the steps taken by the University following an unfortunate incident off campus last month that involved two young men who, at the time, were part of the Bronco football team. The young men were quickly suspended and then dismissed, once the full scope of their actions were known. Football Coach P.J. Fleck and Athletic Director Kathy Beauregard moved quickly and appropriately while consulting with President John M. Dunn, who in turn apprised the board of this disappointing news. We fully support the steps taken and the level of transparency offered to news organizations, as all sought to understand what led to this serious breach of student and student-athlete conduct codes. We are proud of the way the University responded completely to all questions, even in the light of some inaccurate reporting. As a board, we consider the matter closed and are confident that lessons learned from the event will have an impact on the future.

Kenneth V. Miller
