First, check that your popup blocker allows http://elearn.wmich.edu to popup windows. Keep in mind that if you have installed any of those nifty tool bars for your browser (for instance from Google, Yahoo, etc), popup blockers associated with these tool bars also have to be turned off.
Internet Explorer will always block the first download of a file from a web site. The browser thinks the download is a security risk. This behavior affects Word, Excel, Powerpoint, exectuables, and any other non-Web/binary formated document. It doesn't affect PDF files. For this reason, faculty are encouraged to post PDF files to E-learning sites.
When IE blocks a download of a Word document, a message is displayed at the top of the E-learning window above the Western Michigan University banner

Click on ther 'Click here for options" link and select "Download File."
Unfortuately, this won't download the file. Instead, the My E-learning page is displayed.
Click on your class link to return to your course. Now Word documents can be downloaded from any E-learning window from the computer you are using.
To download a different type of document, for instance an Excel workbook or PowerPoint presentation, this process will need to be repeated.
