Chairman of Aspen Institute to speak

KALAMAZOO -- Ann McLaughlin, chairman of the Aspen Institute in Washington, D.C., will make a presentation as part of this year's Haworth College of Business Distinguished Speaker Series at Western Michigan University Thursday, Feb. 19.

She will speak at 7:30 p.m. in the Brown Auditorium of Schneider Hall on "The Aspen Institute: Whose Values, Which Values?"

Business and community leaders from Southwest Michigan as well as WMU faculty, staff and students will be attending the event. While the lecture is by invitation only, media representatives are welcome to attend. McLaughlin will be available immediately following the lecture to answer questions from the media related to her presentation.

The Aspen Institute is an international, non-profit, non-partisan, educational institution founded in 1950. Its mission is to enhance the quality of leadership through open debate in forums of diverse groups of men and women from business, labor, government, the arts, the professions and the non-profit sector. While its headquarters are in Washington, D.C., programs and seminars are conducted at facilities in Aspen, Colo., and on Maryland's eastern shore.

McLaughlin has held senior positions in business, government and the non-profit sector. Her diverse career in U.S. government has included stints as secretary of labor, assistant secretary of the treasury, undersecretary of the interior and chairman of the President's Commission on Aviation Safety and Terrorism. She serves on the boards of directors of the Kellogg Co., General Motors, the AMR Corp., Nordstrom and Donna Karan International Inc.

The Distinguished Speaker Series is intended to bring business, education and government leaders to campus to discuss a variety of topics of interest to the University and Southwest Michigan. It is coordinated by Dr. Christopher M. Korth, chairman of the Department of Finance and Commercial Law.

Also scheduled to speak this academic year is Edsel B. Ford II, president of the Ford Motor Credit Co. His lecture is slated for Thursday, April 2.
