Hogan family gives WMU $100,000 for baseball scoreboard and scholarship

March 24, 1998

KALAMAZOO -- The family of the late Jerry Hogan, a standout baseball player at Western Michigan University who graduated from WMU in 1952, has donated $100,000 to the WMU Foundation for a new baseball scoreboard in Hyames Field and established an endowed baseball scholarship.

"We're honored to provide this in Jerry's memory," said Rosie Hogan of Portage, his wife. "He loved baseball, and he loved WMU." Rosie Hogan and couple's three children, Kerry Hogan-McLean of Kalamazoo, Linda Larkin of Lawton and Michael Hogan of Scotts, also are graduates or attended WMU.

"All of us at WMU appreciate the generosity of Rosie Hogan and the entire Hogan family," said Keith A. Pretty, president of the WMU Foundation. "I can think of no greater tribute to a former student athlete and longtime WMU baseball supporter."

The Jerry Hogan Endowed Baseball Scholarship will be established with $30,000 of the total gift. It will generate scholarship opportunities for students who are members of the Bronco baseball team. Preference will be given to those with financial need.

The remainder of the gift will enable WMU to erect the Jerry Hogan Memorial Scoreboard. The electronic scoreboard will be located in left center field along Stadium Drive. Team schedules for several sports will be displayed on the back of the scoreboard, depending on the season.

Ground will be broken for the scoreboard in a brief ceremony during the WMU baseball game Tuesday, March 24, beginning at 4 p.m. at Hyames Field. Participants will include Rosie Hogan and the three children; Pretty; Kathy B. Beauregard, director of intercollegiate athletics; and Fred Decker, baseball coach.

Jerry Hogan, a pitcher, was named to the all-Mid-American Conference baseball team in 1949 and pitched one of the few no-hitters in Bronco baseball history. He was the owner and operator of the Hogan Insurance Agency, which has offices in Portage and Paw Paw. He died in 1994.
