Student orientation leaders named

June 2, 1998

KALAMAZOO -- Thirty-three students who will "open new doors" for incoming freshmen as an orientation student leader this summer during Western Michigan University's orientation program.

Each leader is in charge of a small group of students during the 11 two-day sessions between June 8 and July 21. The student leaders will help freshmen and their parents become acquainted with WMU's campus by giving tours, assisting students in registering for fall semester classes and facilitating student development and social activities.

More than 80 applications were received for the positions, and 33 of the applicants were hired in February to be part of the team. They were selected on the basis of group and personal interviews, references, academic standing, curriculum, work experience and campus involvement in student organizations.

"The competition to be an orientation leader is intense," said Donna L. StJohn, orientation coordinator. "To be selected represents one of the highest leadership accolades the University can bestow on a student."

Before the start of the program, the leaders enroll in a four-week training class that covers academics, activities, housing, student development, group building, diversity and general University information. During the orientation sessions, they will focus on this year's theme, "Opening New Doors," by informing the freshmen of the many doors that will open to them during and after their enrollment at WMU.

"Orientation student leaders play a key role in the orientation process because they are with the freshmen throughout the entire session," StJohn said. "During the fall semester, the leaders will meet again with their freshmen to see how they are adapting to the University community."

More than 3,400 freshmen and 1,800 parents are expected to attend orientation at WMU this summer.
