Barry-Loken named outstanding new professional by NASPA

February 11, 1999

KALAMAZOO -- The leading national association for student affairs administrators in colleges and universities has given one of its prestigious regional awards to Sandy Barry-Loken, assistant director for student activities and leadership programs at Western Michigan University.

Barry-Loken received the outstanding new professional award for 1999 from the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators Region IV-East.

The honor was presented at the regional convention Jan. 31 in Oak Brook, Ill. Recipients are selected based on outstanding service to their institution, innovation or creative efforts on the job, and active involvement in NASPA and/or other professional organizations.

Nominating Barry-Loken for the award were Dr. Marilyn LaPlante, vice president for experiential education at Kalamazoo College, and Dr. Theresa A. Powell, vice president for student affairs at WMU. Powell will conclude a three-year term this March as Region IV-East vice president.

NASPA serves student affairs administrators in higher education, in part by providing a variety of leadership and professional development activities. Its IV-east region covers Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota and the Canadian province of Ontario.

Barry-Loken graduated from WMU in 1994 with a bachelor of arts degree in public relations. The same year, she began pursuing a master's degree and was selected to work in the Division of Student Affairs under the University's Presidential Internship Program.

The program, which has since been discontinued, placed students in on-campus administrative positions while they pursued their graduate degrees. Barry-Loken served for four years as executive assistant to Powell. She received her master of arts degree in student affairs in higher education in 1997 and was named to her current position in 1998.

As assistant director for student activities and leadership programs, Barry-Loken develops out-of-class learning experiences for students and helps students adjust to campus life. She also works on office publications and has some budgetary responsibilities.
