Bronco student-athletes set academic records

KALAMAZOO -- For the second straight year, student-athletes at Western Michigan University have recorded the second-highest cumulative grade-point average in the Mid-American Conference. WMU posted an overall GPA of 2.95 in the 18 MAC sports it sponsors to finish behind Central Michigan (3.0), which captured the Institutional Academic Achievement Award, announced by the MAC office on July 15.

With the addition of ice hockey and synchronized skating, Western Michigan's 20 sports programs produced the highest semester GPA in school history last winter. Other WMU academic highlights included:

"The increasing number of student-athletes achieving at high levels in the classroom is a very positive sign," said Jeff Stone, assistant athletic director for academics. "I'm pleased that the young men and women in our programs are being recognized for their strong academic performance."
