Oct. 21, 1999

KALAMAZOO -- With early registration numbers running far ahead of original expectations, organizers of Western Michigan University's first Homecoming Campus Classic are expecting around 1,000 competitors for the Saturday, Oct. 23, 5K race, 1K kids' fun run and 1K walk.

The races will start and finish in front of the Bernhard Center and will take competitors across the scenic WMU campus. The 1K events are scheduled to begin first at 9 a.m. The 5K race is slated for a 9:30 a.m. start. The Campus Classic is part of WMU's annual Homecoming celebration and contestants will include alumni, students, community members and friends of the University.

Runners and walkers from across Michigan and such states as Indiana, Wisconsin, Missouri and Texas will compete as individuals or as members of three-person teams. More than 30 teams representing Kalamazoo area firms and student organizations have registered in advance, as have local political figures.

Following the competitions, an awards ceremony will take place at the Hyames Field tailgate area, with the first Campus Classic Trophy winners announced. A number of other prizes for top competitors in a variety of categories will be awarded and a raffle of prizes donated by more than 20 Southwest Michigan businesses and campus organizations also will take place. That ceremony is expected to begin at 11 a.m.
