KALAMAZOO -- The WMU volleyball team improved to 13-3 overall, 5-0 in the Mid-American Conference, with a 3-0 win over Northern Illinois on Wednesday (Oct. 6).
The Broncos have won 12 of their past 13 matches and opened the MAC schedule 5-0 for the first time since 1989. The 1989 team advanced to the NCAA tournament. WMU has lost only one game (15-1) in its first five MAC matches, which are best-of-five competitions.
Playing in front of 564 fans in University Arena, the Broncos won 15-6, 15-11, and 15-11 against NIU, snapping a four-match losing streak versus the Huskies.
Senior Mandy Whitfield led the Broncos with 19 kills (.314). Junior Monyka Paul added 12 kills (.304) and senior Traci Morin had 10 (.250). Sophomore Zakiya Pope had nine kills and an impressive .643 attack percentage.
Junior defensive specialist Kelly Kuharski led the Broncos with 14 digs. Kuharski has had 10 or more digs in four consecutive matches. Freshman Cindy Kizer added nine digs and recorded her 18th service ace of the season. Setter Jen Nowak had 12 digs, and Whitfield had 11.
Nowak assisted her teammates 51 times for a 17.0 assists-per-game average.
