KALAMAZOO -- The Western Michigan University volleyball team extended its winning streak to eight by defeating Buffalo on Friday (Oct. 15).
The Broncos posted a 3-0 (15-7, 15-7, 15-3) win over the Bulls before 576 fans Friday. WMU upped its overall record to 16-3 and its Mid-American Conference mark to 8-0.
Miami University was handed its first MAC loss of the season, 3-0, by Ball State, leaving WMU as the lone remaining undefeated team in the conference.
WMU is just three wins shy of matching its total from the 1998 season.
The Broncos' 8-0 league start is the program's best since the 1988 squad went 8-0 during the conference season. Western Michigan's eight-match win streak is the program's best since the 1996 squad won eight straight to start the year.
Traci Morin came through with 10 kills and a .588 attack percentage. Morin also had four blocks. WMU got nine kills from Mandy Whitfield. Sophomore Zakiya Pope and junior Monyka Paul both registered eight kills. Western Michigan hit .333 (44-14-90) as a team to post the win. Jen Nowak had 39 assists in the victory. Kelly Kuharski had nine digs for WMU.
Western Michigan heads to Oxford, Ohio, for a showdown with Miami on Wednesday, Oct. 20. The Broncos play two matches at home next weekend. WMU hosts Marshall next Friday (Oct. 22) at 7 p.m. and welcomes Ohio to University Arena on Saturday (Oct. 23) at 6 p.m.
