Best MAC start in school history for football Broncos

KALAMAZOO -- The football Broncos (5-2 overall, 4-0 MAC) blasted Buffalo, 45-17, at Waldo Stadium on Saturday night (Oct. 16).

The Broncos remain the only undefeated team in the Mid-American Conference West Division. With the victory, Western Michigan University is 4-0 in MAC football for the first time in school history.

Senior quarterback Tim Lester, who entered the game as the nation's leader in touchdown passes with 20, increased that mark to 23 with three TD passes. He completed 22 of 36 passes for 407 yards. Steve Neal entered the game as the nation's leader in TD catches with nine. He boosted his total to 11 with two TD grabs among seven receptions for 122 yards. Robert Sanford gained 107 yards on 17 carries in the win over Buffalo, which remains winless in the MAC this season.

Saturday night's game was played before 15, 516 fans, raising total attendance for home matches this season to 87,492 , an average of more than 29,000 per home contest. The Broncos host Ball State in the annual Homecoming game on Saturday, Oct. 23, beginning at 1 p.m. at Waldo Stadium.
