Oct. 23, 1999

KALAMAZOO -- Western Michigan University's football Broncos (6-2 overall, 5-0 MAC) won, 28-0, versus Ball State in front of a Homecoming crowd of 16,404 at Waldo Stadium. It was the first shutout victory for WMU since 1995.

Quarterback Tim Lester completed 21 of 41 passes for 296 yards. He connected with three different receivers for touchdowns, raising his season total to 27 TD passes. Josh Bush caught two TD passes. Robert Sanford and Corey Alston collected one apiece.

On Saturday, Lester moved ahead of Donovan McNabb and John Elway in collegiate career touchdown passes. This season, he has already surpassed the collegiate totals of Andre Ware, Tim Couch, Shane Matthews, and Dan Marino, among others. Lester, with 80 career completions for TDs, is now ninth on the all-time list.

The Bronco defense turned in a great performance in the shutout, including seven sacks of the opposing quarterback. Scott Niles led the Broncos for the third straight game with 15 tackles, including seven solos. Jeremy Johnson had four tackles and two sacks.

Next Saturday, Oct. 30, the Broncos travel to Akron for a 1:30 p.m. contest.
