TOLEDO, Ohio -- The WMU volleyball Broncos (21-3 overall, 13-0 MAC) clinched a berth in the 1999 MAC tournament with a 3-1 victory at Eastern Michigan on Friday (Oct. 29). The Broncos then added a 3-0 win at Toledo on Saturday (Oct. 30) to their conference-leading total.
The Broncos are the lone remaining undefeated team in the Mid-American Conference and have won 39 of 43 games played in conference matches. WMU has won 13 consecutive matches and 21 of their past 22.
The Broncos return to University Arena Nov. 5 and 6 for their final home matches of the regular season, versus Akron and Miami. Both matches begin at 7 p.m. Seniors Traci Morin and MandyWhitfield will be honored prior to the start of the Nov. 6 match with Miami.
Saturday, Oct. 30, won 3-0 at Toledo (15-7, 15-7, 15-11)
Junior Monyka Paul led WMU with 14 kills. She hit .542 for the match and contributed six digs. Mandy Whitfield had a double-double with 13 kills and 11 digs. Traci Morin also had a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs. Junior Alberta Griffin added 10 kills and four digs. She hit .286 in the match.
Morin, who leads the MAC in hitting percentage and is among the nation's leaders in that category, hit a blistering .647 against Toledo. She had no errors in 17 attempts (11-0-17).
As a team, WMU both out-hit (.369 to .164) and out-blocked (8 to 1) Toledo.
Junior setter Jen Nowak paced the Broncos with 30 assists. Freshman Ashley Ritter set the Broncos for kills 17 times in game three.
Friday, Oct. 29, won 3-1 at EMU (15-5, 15-11, 8-15, 15-8)
Mandy Whitfield led all players with 15 kills. Traci Morin had 13 kills and a .321 attack percentage. Sophomore Zakiya Pope added 12 kills and had a career-high eight blocks.
Monyka Paul and Alberta Griffin each contributed 10 kills. Paul also had 10 digs for her first double-double of the season. Junior defensive specialist Kelly Kuharski led the Broncos with a season-high 17 digs.
