Students win industry-sponsored food marketing scholarships

KALAMAZOO -- Thirty-two Western Michigan University students in the food marketing program were recently named recipients of an industry funded scholarship. Scholarships between $1,000 and $5,000 were awarded.

To be eligible, students must have declared a major in food marketing and earned at least a 2.5 grade point average. Consideration for an award was also given to a demonstrated career interest in food marketing, work experience, participation in university, community events and faculty recommendations.

Listed below, by home town (all in Michigan), are the 32 recipients.

ALLENDALE
Brian Eikenberry, who graduated from Allendale High School in 1996, is a senior majoring in food marketing. He is the son of Glenda Eikenberry of 6948 Sunset Drive, and Roger Eikenberry of 2311 S. Hilltop, Muskegon. Eikenberry received a $1,500 Sid Brooks Endowed Memorial Scholarship, which is presented in honor of the late director of trade relations for Gerber Products Company.

BATTLE CREEK
Sara Briggs, who graduated from Harper Creek High School in 1994, is a senior majoring in food marketing. She is the daughter of John and Linda Briggs of 115 Grand Castle Terrace. Briggs received a $2,000 Nabisco Food Groups Scholarship.

Gene Hughes II, who graduated from Lakeview High School in 1996, is a senior majoring in food marketing. He is the son of Gene and Dorothy Hughes of 142 Deerpath Lane. Hughes received a $1,000 Kellogg Food Marketing Scholarship.

BLOOMFIELD HILLS
Frank X. Gaughen IV, who graduated from Brother Rice High School in 1995, is a senior majoring in food marketing. He is the son of Frank and Valerie Gaughen of Palm Harbor, Fla. Gaughen received a $2,000 MSM Solutions Scholarship.

CENTERVILLE
Martin Murk, who graduated from Centerville High School in 1996, is a senior majoring in food marketing. He is the son of Allan and Trudy Murk of 598 Anthony Drive. Murk received a $5,000 Georgia-Pacific Corp. Scholarship.

FARMINGTON HILLS
Nicole Bullion, who graduated from Farmington High School in 1996, is a senior majoring in food marketing. She is the daughter of Michael and Karen Bullion of 36719 Kenmore. Bullion received a $1,000 Michigan Food & Beverage Association Scholarship.

FENNVILLE
Ramiro Rodriguez, who graduated from Fennville High School in 1996, is a senior majoring in food marketing. He is the son of Bonifacio and Sylvia Rodriguez of 129 Walter St. Rodriguez received a $1,500 Chicago Food Brokers Association Scholarship.

FLAT ROCK
Melanie Reeves, who graduated from Flat Rock High School in 1995, is a senior majoring in food marketing. She is the daughter of Larry Reeves of Flat Rock and Roberta Williams of Brownstown Township. Reeves received a $2,000 Nestle Food Marketing Scholarship.

FRANKENMUTH
Rachel Gould, who graduated from Frankenmuth High School in 1996, is a senior majoring in food marketing. She is the daughter of Kenneth and Deborah Chaltraw of 437 Leslie Drive. Gould received a $2,000 Kellogg Food Marketing Scholarship.

GARDEN CITY
Dean Allen, who graduated from Garden City High School in 1995, is a senior majoring in food marketing. He is the son of Gary and Linda Allen of 270 N. Venoy Circle. Allen received a $1,500 Richard Neschich Endowed Food Marketing Scholarship, which is presented in honor of Richard Neschich, WMU associate professor emeritus of food marketing.

GARDEN BLANC
Jason J. Londrigan, who graduated from Grand Blanc High School in 1996, is a senior majoring in food marketing. He is the son of Paul and Desiree Londrigan of 5224 Copley Square. Londrigan received a $2,000 Coca-Cola Food Marketing Food Fellow award.

GRAND RAPIDS
Scott Crowley, who graduated from Creston High School in 1996, is a senior majoring in food marketing. He is the son of Don and Renell Crowley of 2853 Foster N.E. Crowley received a $3,000 Coca-Cola Food Marketing Fellow award.

GROSSE POINT WOODS
Adam Bryant, who graduated from Grosse Pointe North High School in 1996, is a senior majoring in food marketing. He is the son of Lee and Lillian Bryant of 989 Woods Lane. Bryant received a $1,000 Distinguished Order of Zerocrats scholarship. The Distinguished Order of Zerocrats is an organization of leaders in the frozen food industry.

HEMLOCK
Shawn Cline, who graduated from Hemlock High School in 1996, is a senior majoring in food marketing. He is the son of Jerry and Sharon Cline of 2883 N. Orr Road. Cline received a $2,500 Julie Kravitz Endowed Memorial Scholarship, which is presented in honor of the former chairman of Pic 'n' Pay Super Markets.

HUDSON
Kate Donaldson, who graduated from Hudson High School in 1996, is a senior majoring in food marketing. She is the daughter of John and Barbara Donaldson of 12900 Beecher. Donaldson received a $3,000 Coca-Coca Food Marketing Food Fellow award.

JENISON
Brian Carter, who graduated from Jenison High School in 1996, is a senior majoring in food marketing. He is the son of Sandy Carter of 7489 23rd Ave. Carter received a $1,000 Tyler Refrigeration Food Marketing Scholarship.

Karin Koets, who graduated from Unity Christian High School in 1996, is a senior majoring in food marketing. She is the daughter of Lee and Ruth Koets of 2401 Rockhill Court. Koets received a $2,000 H.J. Heinz Company Food Marketing Scholarship.

KALAMAZOO
Beth Mejeur, who graduated from Kalamazoo Christian High School in 1995, is a senior majoring in food marketing. She is the daughter of Thomas and Rose Mejeur of 242 Courtney St., Galesburg. Mejeur received a $1,000 Patrick M. Quinn Endowed Food Marketing Scholarship.

Jessica Savage, who graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School in 1996, is a senior majoring in food marketing. She is the daughter of Robert and Renate Savage of 3307 Dearborn. Savage received a $3,000 Kellogg Food Marketing Scholarship.

LAWRENCE
Terah VanDam, who graduated from Lawrence High School in 1996, is a senior majoring in food marketing. She is the daughter of Kimberly Weese of 3905 N. Deadwood Drive, Portage. VanDam received a $5,000 Georgia-Pacific Corp. Scholarship.

LIVONIA
Robert Acquilina, who graduated from Gabriel Richard High School in Riverview in 1995, is a senior majoring in food marketing. He is the son of Charles Acquilina of 15319 Sunset and Veronica Jacek of Wyandotte. Acquilina received a $1,000 Wal-Mart Stores Food Marketing Scholarship.

Christina Bliudzius, who graduated from Livonia Franklin High School in 1996, is a senior majoring in food marketing. She is the daughter of Romas Bliudzius of 7609 Terri, Westland, and Irene Bliudzius of 215 E. Ann Arbor Trail, Plymouth. Bliudzius received a $2,000 Kellogg Food Marketing Scholarship.

MUSKEGON
Eric Witt, who graduated from Muskegon High School in 1993, is a senior majoring in food marketing. He is the son of Michael Witt of 2324 Denmark and Bonnie Witt of 2261 Surfwood Drive. Witt received a $1,000 Distinguished Order of Zerocrats Scholarship. The Distinguished Order of Zerocrats is an organization of leaders in the frozen food industry.

NILES
Daniel Aykroyd is a senior majoring in food marketing. He is the son of Stephen and Carla Aykroyd of 1016 Tomahawk. Aykroyd received a $1,000 Wal-Mart Stores Food Marketing Scholarship.

Kara Watson, who graduated from Niles High School in 1995, is a senior majoring in food marketing. She is the daughter of Tom Watson of 1299 Leet Road and Helen Drotoz of 530 French St. Watson received a $1,000 Wal-Mart Stores Food Marketing Scholarship.

Nora Weeks, who graduated from Niles High School in 1997, is a junior majoring in food marketing. She is the daughter of Nora Nowak of 305 Knott Road and Danny Weeks of Granger, Ind. Weeks received a $2,000 Chicago Food Brokers Association Scholarship.

PORTAGE
Andrea Saewert, who graduated from Portage Central High School in 1995, is a senior majoring in food marketing. She is the daughter of Tom Saewert of Lakeside Drive and Shelley Hay of Woodbridge Lane. Saewert received a $1,000 Wal-Mart Stores Food Marketing Scholarship.

ROMULUS
Karen Crova, who graduated from Grabriel Richard High School in Riverview in 1997, is a senior majoring in food marketing. She is the daughter of William and Carol Crova of 37054 Grant. Crova received a $5,000 Farmer Jack Supermarkets Scholarship.

SAUGATUCK
Amber Prince, who graduated from Saugatuck High School in 1997, is a junior majoring in food marketing. She is the daughter of Michael and Carol Prince of 747 Butler St. Prince received a $2,000 Chicago Food Brokers Association Scholarship.

SHELBY TOWNSHIP
Amy Peardon, who graduated from Eisenhower High School in 1995, is a senior majoring in food marketing and Spanish. She is the daughter of John and Jan Peardon of 47601 Province Court. Peardon received a $1,000 Jules W. Englander Endowed Memorial Scholarship, which is presented in honor of the former CEO of Mark & Goergens Inc.

TRENTON
Bridgette Bartal, who graduated from Trenton High School in 1996, is a senior majoring in food marketing. She is the daughter of James Bartal of 1797 Churchill and Cathy Alexander of Las Vegas, Nev. Bartal received a $1,000 Distinguished Order of Zerocrats Scholarship. The Distinguished Order of Zerocrats is an organization of leaders in the frozen food industry.

UTICA

Hayley Mahan, who graduated from Utica High School in 1996, is a senior majoring in food marketing. She is the daughter of Sylvester and Mary Mahan of 6626 Lake Pointe. Mahan received a $1,000 Distinguished Order of Zerocrats Scholarship. The Distinguished Order of Zerocrats is an organization of leaders in the frozen food industry.

WILLIAMSTON
Terri Enfield, who graduated from Williamston High School in 1996, is a senior majoring in food marketing. She is the daughter of Tom and Patty Enfield of 342 E. Grand River. Enfield received a $2,000 Nabisco Food Groups Scholarship.
