OMAHA, Neb. -- The WMU hockey team (5-5-2 overall, 5-5-2 CCHA) lost, 3-1 (Nov. 12), and tied, 4-4 (Nov. 13), in their first-ever matches versus the University of Nebraska Omaha.
Nebraska Omaha (2-3-3, 2-3-3 CCHA) is a first-year member of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association, in its third season of Division I hockey.
Five goals were scored in a wild third period of Saturday night's 4-4 tie. David Gove had one goal and two assists for the Broncos. Ben Gagnon scored the game-saving goal for Western Michigan.
In Friday night's contest, WMU fell behind 2-0 and couldn't recover in the 3-1 loss. Playing in front of a capacity crowd of 8,314 at the Omaha Civic Auditorium, the Mavericks treated their home fans to a pair of even-strength goals before WMU answered in the second period on Corey Waring's third goal of the season. UNO outshot WMU, 29-27, as Jeff Reynaert took the loss in goal for the Broncos.
The hockey Broncos next action is Nov. 26 and 27, when they travel to Dartmouth for a pair of non-conference matches. WMU is home of Friday, Dec. 3, for a key CCHA contest versus Ferris State. Faceoff for that match is 7:05 p.m. at Lawson Ice Arena.
