KALAMAZOO -- A recommendation to grant a provisional public school academy charter will be on the agenda when the Western Michigan University Board of Trustees meets Friday, Dec. 10.
Meeting in the Connable Board Room of WMU's Bernhard Center at 11:30 a.m., trustees will consider the first charter proposal brought to them by WMU President Elson S. Floyd, who was authorized by the board last December to initiate a charter school application and screening process. If trustees approve the recommendation, the charter will not take effect until the state increases its current cap on the number of charter schools that can be authorized by university boards and until a number of other agreements are successfully negotiated.
Also at the meeting, the board is expected to consider recommendations to amend the constitutions of both the WMU Faculty Senate and the Western Student Association. They also will consider ratification of re-negotiated terms covering a collective bargaining agreement with power plant employees who are members of the Michigan State Employees Association as well as a recommendation to approve a term loan agreement for work on the University's new engineering campus. Trustees also will hear personnel reports and gift and grant reports for the months of September and October.
Board committee meetings will precede the full board meeting. They will be held in Room 204 of the Bernhard Center at the following times: Academic and Student Affairs Committee at 9:45 a.m. and the Budget and Finance Committee at 10:30 a.m. All meetings are open to the public.
