KALAMAZOO -- The Western Michigan University hockey team will take a month off from competitive action, returning to the ice Jan. 7-8 for a Central Collegiate Hockey Association series versus Alaska Fairbanks in Lawson Arena.

The Broncos (7-7-2 overall, 6-6-2 CCHA) are tied for fourth place in the CCHA standings with half of their league schedule complete. WMU shares fourth place with Lake Superior and Ferris State and trails third-place Michigan by two points.

"I'm pleased with the progress we have made thus far, the guys have shown a willingness to work and compete. We still need to be more consistent as a team, but the effort has been there," says coach Jim Culhane.

Western Michigan enters its holiday break as the third-highest scoring team in the CCHA, averaging 3.5 goals for all games. The Bronco power play ranks third in the CCHA at 18.7 percent (23 for 123) while the penalty-kill unit has generated the second-most short-handed goals (7).

"That fact that we have been able to score goals and be successful on the power play has been the difference for us this season," says Culhane. "With our 'run and shoot' offense we've been able to create more scoring opportunities. Special teams is an area we've concentrated on and the guys have responded."

As a result of the team's success, several WMU players find themselves among the league statistical leaders.

Junior center David Gove (Centerville, Mass.) stands third in overall scoring (25 points) and second in assists (17). Freshman David Cousineau (Waterloo, Ont.) ranks as the top scoring rookie defenseman in the CCHA with 13 points. Sophomore center Mike Bishai (Edmonton, Alta.) paces the CCHA with seven power play goals, has the third-most game-winning goals (3) and is fifth in goals (9). Senior Daryl Andrews (Campbell River, B.C.) is tied with Cousineau as the second-leading scoring defenseman. In addition, sophomore goaltender Jeff Reynaert (Sterling Heights, Mich.) ranks second in minutes played (897:36) and saves (423), third in wins (7).
