Jan. 8, 2000

KALAMAZOO -- Rookie sensation Kristin Koetsier again led the Broncos, with 20 points and 13 rebounds, as the Western Michigan University women's basketball team defeated Marshall, 63-52, on Saturday, Jan. 8, at University Arena.

WMU has won three straight contests, improved to 5-7 overall, and is off to its best start (2-0) in the Mid-American Conference since 1994-95. The Broncos also remain undefeated, 3-0, on their home court this season.

Koetsier scored the Bronco's first seven points of the contest to give WMU an early 7-2 advantage. Senior Shelsea Erving then scored her first of five three-point baskets, and the Broncos built the lead to 13-2. The teams went to the locker room at the intermission with WMU ahead, 33-22.

Marshall (5-8, 0-2 MAC) started the second half with an 8-0 run that cut the lead to three points at 16:45, but that was as close as the Thundering Herd could get. WMU went on a run of their own, built a 19-point advantage, and held on for the 11-point victory.

Erving scored 19 points on the afternoon, including 15 from beyond the arc. She passed Ann Kasdorf (1975-78) to move into fourth place on the Bronco all-time scoring list with 1,419 points. Erving's next 40 points will move her into third on the career scoring list.

Senior forward Danielle Meuller carded her second double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore guard Brianne Gallert had eight points and six assists. Twin sister Brooke also contributed six assists and had three steals.

The Broncos continue MAC competition on Wednesday, Jan. 12, when they travel to Akron for a 7 p.m. start. They return home on Monday, Jan. 17, for a 7 p.m. contest versus Buffalo at University Arena.
