DeKALB, Ill. -- Northern Illinois junior Mike Brown hit a bank shot as time expired to send WMU's men's basketball team to an 0-3 start in the Mid-American Conference. The Broncos fell to 4-8 overall with the 67-66 loss at NIU.
Western Michigan scored 45 points in the first half for an 11-point lead at the intermission, but was held to just 21 points in the second half. The Broncos are 1-3 this season in games decided on the final shot.
Senior Rod Brown led the Broncos with 18 points and had five rebounds. Junior Jon Powell added 13 points, including 11 of 11 from the free throw line.
After a 1-5 season start, the Broncos have gone 3-3 in their past six games, but all three loses in that stretch were against MAC opponents.
Western continues conference competition on Wednesday, Jan. 12, when it hosts Bowling Green. That game begins at 7 p.m. at University Arena.
