Broncos skate to tie versus No. 7-ranked Spartans

Jan. 28, 2000

KALAMAZOO -- Lead by the spectacular play of sophomore goaltender Jeff Reynaert, the WMU hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie in overtime versus No. 7-ranked Michigan State on Friday (Jan. 28) at Lawson Ice Arena. Reynaert made 36 saves in goal for the Broncos, who were out-shot, 38-22, on the evening.

Michigan State scored twice in the first period for the early 2-0 lead, but Western Michigan responded with two goals by sophomore Mike Bishai (BEE-shy). Bishai carded his team-leading 12th and 13th goals of the season, and his seventh power-play goal.

The contest was televised on WWMT-TV3 in Kalamazoo and attracted a standing-room-only crowd of 3,613 fans.

With the tie, WMU is 8-12-3 overall and 7-9-3 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. Michigan State, which entered the contest tied for second place in the CCHA, is 17-7-2 overall and 12-5-1 in the conference.

The two teams face off again on Saturday, Jan. 29, beginning at 7:05 p.m. at Lawson Arena. The contest can be heard on the Bronco Radio Network (Flagship station WFAT-96.5 FM Kalamazoo), and via broadcast.com on the Bronco Web site <www.wmubroncos.com>.

The Spartans remain unbeaten in the past nine encounters with the Broncos (6-0-3) dating to the 1996-97 season. The last Bronco win over MSU in Lawson occurred Feb. 7, 1997.

WMU is 0-0-1 in a current six-match stretch against the top teams in the CCHA. The Broncos play, in consecutive two-game weekend series, MSU (second place), Northern Michigan (second) and Michigan (first place).
