KALAMAZOO -- Western Michigan University students who have demonstrated a strong commitment to volunteer service can compete for cash prizes totaling $5,000.

The prizes are being offered through the ninth annual Volunteer Service Contest sponsored by WMU's Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships. Ten awards of $500 each will be given out for the 2000-2001 academic year.

Students may apply for one of the awards or be nominated by a WMU employee or an off-campus individual with whom they have worked on a volunteer basis. The deadline for applying is Friday, March 3.

To be eligible, contest entrants must currently be registered at WMU and taking at least one credit hour of classes. In addition, they must be enrolled during the 2000-2001 fall and winter semesters and their volunteer service must have taken place between Jan. 1, 1998, and Jan. 1, 2000.

Applications will be evaluated on the basis of the impact of the student's volunteer work as well as the changes that resulted from this work and the amount of innovation shown while performing this work. Applicants are encouraged to submit photos, brochures and other materials that verify and support their application information.
