OXFORD, Ohio -- WMU's women's basketball team cruised past Miami, 85-69, on Monday night (Feb. 14) for a team-record seventh consecutive conference win. The Broncos, with the best record in the Mid-American Conference, 12-1, clinched the MAC West Division title.
WMU improved to 15-9 overall, with three games remaining in regular season, all against MAC opponents. East Division leader Kent, the only MAC team to defeat the Broncos this season, remained one-half game behind WMU for the best record in the conference with a 66-61 win on Sunday at Northern Illinois. Kent is 11-1 in the conference. Its only loss came at Miami.
By virtue of their West Division championship, the Broncos earn a first-round bye in the MAC Tournament. Their first playoff action will be March 2 in Cleveland in a tournament quarterfinal contest.
For the second game in a row, the Broncos placed all five starters in double-digit scoring. Senior Shelsea Erving led all players with 23 points. Classmate Danielle Mueller scored 20, including the 1,000th point of her career. Mueller also contributed 13 of the Broncos' rebounds for a 38-36 WMU advantage on the boards.
Rookie Kristin Koetsier scored 16 points and grabbed 10 boards for her conference-leading 11th double-double of the season. Sophomore guard Brianne Gallert had 10 points and dished out five assists. Twin sister Brooke, who has been sidelined with an injury the past four games, came off the bench to match her sister's assist total, and added five points to the Bronco effort.
Senior guard Dionne Lassila, making her fifth start in place of the injured Brooke Gallert, notched double-digits on the scoreboard for the fifth consecutive game. Lassila had 11 points, six rebounds, and four assists. In the past four contests, Lassila has average more than 12 points per game.
The Broncos will be home for only one more game this season, when they host Central Michigan on Wednesday, Feb. 23, beginning at 7 p.m. The balance of their regular season schedule will be played at Northern Illinois (Feb. 19), and at Eastern Michigan (Feb. 25).
