Spring practice underway for football team

March 28, 2000

KALAMAZOO -- The Western Michigan University football team began spring drills on March 14, which leads up to the annual Spring Game on Thursday, April 6, at 6:30 p.m., in Waldo Stadium.

The graduation of Tim Lester leaves the starting quarterback's position open. Junior Jeff Welsh and junior college transfer Ryan Harris are the leading candidates to take over. Redshirt freshmen Joshua Nycz and Jonathan Drach will also battle for the job.

New offensive coordinator Brian Rock has a veteran cast of receivers returning, including All-American candidate Steve Neal, who ranks fourth in MAC career receiving yards. Wideouts Corey Alston, Josh Bush, Kendrick Mosley, Micah Zuhl and Darnell Jennings along with tight end Mobolaji Afariogun will be counted on heavily next season.

The Bronco defense returns six starters, led by defensive end Scott Karstens, linebackers Mario Evans and Garrett Soldano and defensive back Ronald Rogers.

Special teams again figure to be a team strength behind the legs of kicker Brad Selent and punter Matt Steffen. Rashad McDade is one of the most dangerous return men in the league.
