Students win scholarships for volunteer service

KALAMAZOO -- Ten Western Michigan University students recently received $500 scholarships for the 2000-2001 academic year in honor of their outstanding volunteer service to the community. Applicants submit an essay and are judged on the impact and innovation of their volunteer work.

This year's scholarship recipients are:

Rachel Bemis (Portage, Mich.), a 1997 graduate of Kalamazoo College, is majoring in aviation flight science.

Jacob Bultema (Kalamazoo), a 1998 Kalamazoo Central High School graduate, is majoring in elementary education.

Taylor Cimala (Stevensville, Mich.), a 1999 Lakeshore High School graduate, is majoring in computer information systems.

Aliya Forrest (Wyoming, Mich.), a 1994 graduate of Creston High School, is majoring in English.

Roxanne Gutowski (Custer, Mich.) is majoring in home economics education.

Jennifer Juliano (Brighton, Mich.) a 1997 Brighton High School graduate, is majoring in elementary education.

Heidi Kern (Vassar, Mich.), a 1996 Vassar High School graduate, is majoring in elementary education.

Alma Rosa Medina (Countryside, Ill.), a 1999 graduate of Lyons Township High School, is majoring in university curriculum.

Derrick Myles (Detroit), a 1996 graduate of Mackenzie High School, is majoring in aviation flight science.

Danielle Tanis (Jenison, Mich.), a 1998 graduate of Jenison High School, is majoring in biomedical sciences.
