KALAMAZOO -- The Western Michigan University gymnastics team claimed fifth place Saturday (April 8) afternoon at the National Invitational Tournament, hosted by Central Michigan University.
The Broncos posted a team score of 192.550 at the event, finishing ahead of San Jose State (190.475) and Temple (187.300) in the seven-team field.
Junior Jennifer Gleissner, who had been struggling in recent weeks, finished the season on a strong note by posting a score of 38.800 in the all-around. The Lenexa, Kansas, native collected a high score of 9.750 on the uneven bars, en route to a fifth-place all-around finish.
Junior Andrea Ruhe also performed well at the NIT, claiming second on the uneven bars with a mark of 9.875. Ruhe's effort was the top individual event finish of any Bronco. Classmate Amy Kinsey claimed a tie for the fourth position on the vault with a score of 9.725 and Sara Trudeau tallied a fifth-place finish on the balance beam (9.800).
WMU claimed sixth place at the 1999 NIT.
