Men's tennis team posts 3-0 road trip

KALAMAZOO -- The Western Michigan University men's tennis team posted a perfect 3-0 record on its three-match road trip over the weekend.

The Broncos knocked off Toledo 6-1 on Sunday (April 9) to complete their road swing undefeated. WMU defeated Eastern Michigan 7-0 on Saturday (April 8) and knocked off Buffalo by the same score on Friday (April 7).

Western Michigan is now 12-7 overall, 4-0 in the Mid-American Conference.

The Broncos visit Bowling Green April 15 before returning home for a showdown with Ball State April 22.

Sunday's victory at Toledo was the 100th of Bronco head coach Dave Morin's collegiate coaching career. Morin is now 100-82 as a head coach. He is 58-35 overall, 24-9 in MAC matches as the WMU mentor.

WMU 6 Toledo 1

Steve Pillon and Ryan Tomlinson recorded doubles win No. 25 with an 8-5 win over Carlos Lomena and Josh Weinstein at No. 1. The No. 2 doubles contest saw Kyle Gernhofer and Ryan Maarschalk outlast Anthony Lipp and Dipesh Rao 9-8 while Fernando Garcia and Jeff Brink won 8-4 at No. 3.

Garcia fell 6-4, 6-4 in No. 1 singles play. Pillon stayed perfect in league singles action with a straight sets (6-2, 6-1) win over Gernot Kerschbaumer at No. 2. Tomlinson and Gernhofer notched victories at No. 3 and 4 singles, respectively. Tomlinson beat Lomena 6-4, 6-4 while Gernhofer defeated Weinstein 6-3, 7-5. Brink was a 6-1, 5-7, 6-1 winner against Rao in the No. 5 singles match. Maarschalk improved to 3-0 in MAC play with a 7-6, 7-5 win over the Rockets' Manuel Scherer at No. 6.

WMU 7 Eastern Michigan 0

WMU did not lose a singles or doubles match en route to the win over the rival Eagles. Steve Pillon and Ryan Tomlinson won their 24th doubles match of the year with an 8-6 win over Jason Yue and Rob Harrigan at No. 1. Kyle Gernhofer and Ryan Maarschalk teamed up to win 8-1 at No. 2 while Fernando Garcia and Kai Blache were 8-3 victors in the No. 3 doubles bout.

Pillon rallied to post a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 No. 1 singles triumph over Yue. Garcia cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2 while Tomlinson was a 7-5, 6-0 winner at No. 3. Gernhofer knocked off Mike Case 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4, Brink beat Hunter
Stenzel 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5, and Maarschalk was a 6-3, 6-0 winner over Mike Adanti at No. 6.
