KALAMAZOO -- The WMU women's tennis team won its fifth straight match with a 6-1 win over Bowling Green on Saturday (April 15). The Broncos defeated Ball State on Friday (April 14), also by a score of 6-1. Both matches were played at WMU's Sorensen Courts.
WMU is now 14-6 overall, 6-1 in the Mid-American Conference. Western Michigan wraps up the regular season with road matches at Akron on Friday (April 21) and at Buffalo on Saturday (April 22). The 2000 MAC Championships will be hosted by WMU April 27-30.
WMU 6 Bowling Green 1 (Saturday, April 15)
The Broncos swept the doubles matches by a combined 24-8 score and took five of the six singles bouts against the Falcons at WMU's Sorenson Courts.
Larissa Chinwah and Nikki Thompson were 8-3 winners at No. 1 doubles. Melanie Remynse and Cyra Malik teamed up for an 8-4 triumph at No. 2 while the No. 3 doubles contest saw seniors Diana Dimitrescu and Kendra Becker improve to 7-0 in the MAC with an easy 8-1 win.
Chinwah notched her fourth straight win at No. 1 singles by knocking off BGSU's Abby Bratton. Malik was a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 winner at No. 2 while Thompson won in straight sets (6-0, 6-3) in the No. 3 singles match. Remynse was defeated 6-2, 7-6 at No. 4. Dimitrescu stayed perfect in MAC singles action by winning 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5. Becker beat Tracy Howitt 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6 for her 25th singles triumph of the season.
WMU 6 Ball State 1 (Friday, April 14)
The nationally ranked Broncos saw their win streak grow with the 6-1 win over Ball State at Sorenson Courts.
WMU took a 1-0 lead with wins at No. 1 and 3 doubles against Ball State. Larissa Chinwah and Nikki Thompson were 8-2 victors over Gena Tranquada and Darcy Poulos at No. 1 while Diana Dimitrescu and Kendra Becker stayed perfect in MAC doubles play with an 8-0 win over Shelly Brizendine and Alyce Zollman in the No. 3 doubles match. Melanie Remynse and Cyra Malik fell 8-6 at No. 2.
Chinwah won her third straight No. 1 singles match with a 7-5, 7-5 win over BSU's Gena Tranquada. Malik was defeated 7-6, 6-3 by Julie Beckman at No. 2. Thompson was a 6-2, 7-5 winner at No. 3 while Remynse improved to 5-1 in league singles play with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Susie Miller in the No. 4 singles contest. Dimitrescu, the MAC Player of the Week, improved to 6-0 in the conference with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph over the Cardinals' Shelly Brizendine at No. 5. Becker notched her team-leading 24th singles victory by knocking off Alyce Zollman 6-2, 7-5 at No. 6.
