KALAMAZOO -- The WMU men's tennis team advanced to the championship match of the 2000 Mid-American Conference Men's Tennis Tournament with a 4-0 win over No. 4 Toledo on the Rockets' home court.
The Broncos face No. 3 seed Ball State on Saturday (April 29) at 1 p.m. in the tournament title match. WMU defeated Ball State 4-3 April 22 but lost by the same score at Bowling Green April 15. BSU knocked off Bowling Green 4-0 on Friday to advance.
Western Michigan and Ball State have played for the MAC title three straight seasons. WMU won the 1999 MAC Tournament and earned the first automatic NCAA Tournament bid in conference and program history. The Broncos captured a share of the 2000 MAC title with their 4-3 victory over Ball State.
WMU earned the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and 3. Steve Pillon and Ryan Tomlinson teamed up for an 8-2 triumph at No. 1. Kyle Gernhofer and rookie Ryan Maarschalk won by the same score at No. 3. Jeff Brink and Fernando Garcia led 6-4 at No. 2, but that match was not completed.
Western Michigan posted wins at No. 1, 3, and 4 singles to win the match and earn the chance to play for the conference tournament crown. Garcia defeated Jorge Morales 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1. Christian Brattstrom posted a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Josh Weinstein in No. 3 singles. Tomlinson knocked off UT's Carlos Lomena 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4.
In other singles action, Pillon led Gernot Kerschbaumer 4-6, 6-3, 3-0 at No. 2; Gernhofer was tied 2-6, 6-2, 1-1 with Manuel Scherer at No. 5 while Brink was knotted up 4-6, 6-4 in a No. 6 singles bout versus Anthony Lipp. WMU is now 14-8 in all matches.
