Women's tennis team wins MAC Championship

KALAMAZOO -- The Western Michigan University women's tennis team earned a return trip to the NCAA Tournament with a 4-0 victory over Marshall in the title match of the 2000 Mid-American Conference Women's Tennis Tournament on Sunday (April 30) at Sorensen Courts.

The Broncos avenged their only regular-season loss with the victory over the top-seeded Herd. WMU is now 19-6. Western Michigan won all three of its tournament matches by 4-0 scores.

WMU learns Thursday (May 4) who and where it will play in the NCAA Tournament. The Broncos played at UCLA last season in their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance.

Western Michigan head coach Betsy Kuhle led her team to its sixth title this season. Kuhle won consecutive MAC championships for the first time in her career. She also won her first title at home in 18 seasons.

The Broncos got doubles wins at No. 2 and 3. Senior Cyra Malik and rookie Melanie Remynse teamed up to win 8-5 at No. 2 to clinch the doubles point. Seniors Kendra Becker and Diana Dimitrescu posted an 8-4 triumph at No. 3. Larissa Chinwah and Nikki Thompson fell 8-2 at No. 1.

A first team all-conference pick, Chinwah cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles over Anna Mitina to avenge a 6-3, 6-4 loss during the regular season. Becker won 6-4, 6-0 at No. 6.

Dimitrescu clinched the victory for Western Michigan with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 5 in her final appearance at Sorensen Courts. She compiled a 30-1 MAC singles record during her collegiate career. Malik trailed 7-5 at No. 2. Thompson was tied, 7-5, 2-4, at No. 3. Remynse led Sheela Cabiling 7-5, 4-3 in her No. 4 singles match.
