President Floyd comments on proposed state appropriation

May 12, 2000

KALAMAZOO -- President Elson S. Floyd commented today on the House Higher Education Subcommittee's proposed 2000-01 funding plan. The subcommittee has approved a 10 percent increase in Western Michigan University's base funding level plus an additional 3 percent in supplemental funds for infrastructure, technology, equipment and maintenance.

"The House has improved on a great budget that emerged from the Senate last month. The proposed increase in funding will help us with the record enrollment that we anticipate in the fall, and the House's support of the tier system should provide long-term funding equity," said Floyd. "Our thanks go to subcommittee chair Rep. Sandra Caul and House Speaker Chuck Perricone for their leadership, and to our many supporters in West Michigan, Lansing and around the state. If this proposal is enacted, we are confident that not only our students but all students attending state universities will benefit."

The next step in the funding process will be for the House to approve the subcommittee's proposals. Then, representatives of both the House and Senate will meet in conference committee to agree upon the final funding recommendations. The process is expected to conclude in June.
