Three students serve as orientation coordinators

June 6, 2000

KALAMAZOO -- Three undergraduate students (see list below) are serving as student orientation coordinators during this summer's orientation program at Western Michigan University. Nearly 4,500 freshmen and more than 3,000 parents are expected to attend the orientation sessions between June 5 and July 25.

The student coodinators act as supervisors of 34 orientation student leaders, who help transfer students and freshmen, as well as their parents, get acquainted with the campus and University services. The coordinators live in Eldridge/Fox and Harrison/Stinson residence halls and operate an office there in order to assure the program runs smoothly during the 13 two-day sessions.

"The student orientation coordinators are an important link between the orientation student leaders and the administration," said Christopher W. Tremblay, coordinator of orientation. "They display professionalism in communication, organization and creativity that enables them to successfully manage the orientation sessions."

Student orientation coordinators are selected on the basis of previous orientation experience, leadership skills, a personal interview, references, academic standing, curriculum, work experience and campus involvement in student organizations.

They were hired as coordinators last October and have since been examining the program in order to enhance the orientation experience. They played a major role in the development of this year's theme, "Driving in New Directions," which centers on steering the new students in the right direction and showing them all of the routes available at WMU.

Serving as orientation coordinators are:

Trevor J. Davies, 309 Beach St., Fenton, Mich., is a junior majoring in recreation. He is the son of Carol and Evan Davies of Fenton.

Surabhi O. Jolly, 6364 Winddrift, Kalamazoo, is a senior majoring in social work. She is the daughter of Om and Savita Jolly of Kalamazoo.

Kristin J. Petrucci, 300 Highland Ave., Burgettstown, Pa., is a junior majoring in food marketing. She is the daughter of James and Mary Anne Petrucci of Burgettstown.
