April 2000 doctoral recipients announced

KALAMAZOO -- Sixteen students (see list below) received doctoral degrees from Western Michigan University at the end of winter session in April.

Ten students received doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees, four earned doctor of education (Ed.D.) degrees and two received doctor of public administration (D.P.A.) degrees in seven fields: biological sciences; counseling psychology; counselor education; educational leadership; psychology; public administration; and sociology.

Diane Marie Ariza of 2219 West Drahner Road, Oxford, Mich., earned a Ph.D. degree in sociology. The title of her dissertation was "A Socio-Cultural Comparative Study of Freshmen of Mexican Descent Attending Western Michigan University."

Treva Lynn Bostic of 705 Waters Edge Drive, Newark, Del., earned a Ph.D. degree in counseling psychology. The title of her dissertation was "A Comparison of African American Elderly Women Abstainers and Light to Moderate Consumers of Alcohol."

Timothy Jerome Cole of 224 Wentworth, Battle Creek, Mich., received a D.P.A. degree in public administration. The title of his dissertation was "Practitioners' Perspectives on Alternatives to the Paper-Based System for Preventing Welfare Fraud." The son of Tom and Mary Ann Cole, he earned bachelor's degrees in criminal justice and security administration from Northern Michigan University and a master's degree in public administration from WMU. Cole is a management analyst with the Michigan Supreme Court.

Lori Ann Diaz of 821 South Michigan, Hastings, Mich., earned a Ph.D. degree in psychology. The title of her dissertation was "A Comparison of Cognitive Restructuring and Systematic Desensitization Techniques for Anger Reduction With an Inmate Population."

Deanna Sue Draze of 1006 Piccadilly Road, Kalamazoo, received a Ph.D. degree in educational leadership. The title of her dissertation was "A Study of the Relationship Between Epistemic Style and Evaluation Practice." The daughter of Carol Reed of Mesa, Ariz., and the late Robert Fennell, Draze is a graduate of LaSalle High School in St. Ignace, Mich., and a former teacher for the St. Ignace Township Schools. She earned both her bachelor's and master's degrees from WMU, and currently works for the University as a research associate conducting program evaluation for K-12 school districts.

Donald J. Green of 4389 Jack Alan SW, Grandville, Mich., earned an Ed.D. degree in educational leadership. The title of his dissertation was "A Comparison of Learning in Adult Accelerated and Non-Accelerated Courses." The son of Don and Mable Green of Brown City, Mich., he earned his bachelor's degree from Michigan State University and a master's degree from Ohio State University. Green is a faculty member at Davenport University's Sneden Graduate School in Grand Rapids, Mich., teaches at Grand Rapids Community College, and owns D. Green and Associates, a corporate consulting firm in Grandville.

Lynn Marie Hallberg Hall of 4434 Glenrose Terrace, Kalamazoo, received a Ph.D. degree in psychology. The title of her dissertation was "Session-by-Session Feedback From Psychotherapy Outcome Assessment: An Analysis of Treatment Utility."

Debra Lindstrom Hazel of 1009 Westmoreland, Kalamazoo, earned a Ph.D. degree in sociology. The title of her dissertation was "Social Factors Related to Recovery After Hip Fracture." The daughter of Violet Gambrel of Joliet, Ill., and the late Leslie W. Lindstrom, she earned her bachelor's degree from Northern Illinois University and her master's degree from WMU. Hazel is an assistant professor in the Department of Occupational Therapy at WMU.

Chia-Lin Hsieh of 7210 Crown Pointe Circle, Portage, Mich., received an Ed.D. degree in educational leadership. The title of her dissertation was "A Study of Parental Characteristics and School Choice."

Shauntey James of 125 Otterbein Ave., Dayton, Ohio, received a Ph.D. degree in sociology. The title of her dissertation was "African-American and White Female Homicide Offenders: Women Who Kill Intimate Partners Versus Non-Intimate Partners in Chicago Between 1980-1995."

Debbie Ann Koeltzow of 4820 Washtenaw, Ann Arbor, Mich., earned an Ed.D. degree in counselor education and counseling psychology. The title of her dissertation was "Research into the Relationships Among Multicultural Training, Racial and Gender Identity Attitudes, and Multicultural Competencies for Counselors."

Halimatun Halaliah Mokhtar of 100 Western Ave., Kalamazoo, received a Ph.D. degree in counselor education. The title of her dissertation was "The Experience of Interpersonal Forgiveness: An Empirical-Phenomenological Investigation."

Mini Paulose-Murphy of 549 King St., Port Chester, N.Y., earned a Ph.D. degree in biological sciences. The title of her dissertation was "Molecular and Biological Characterization of a Tanapox Virus TNF-Binding Protein and the Complete Nucleotide Sequence of the PstI-J Genomic Fragment." The daughter of Mathew and Leelamma Paulose of Port Chester, she earned her bachelor's degree at Virginia Wesleyan College and a master's degree at Long Island University. Paulose-Murphy will be working as a post-doctoral fellow at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md.

Maureen Elizabeth Myers of 2719 Montego, Lansing, Mich., earned a D.P.A. degree in public administration. The title of her dissertation was "The Perceived Economic, Social, and Cultural Impacts of Gaming on a Michigan Indian Tribe."

Chia-Lin Hsieh of 7210 Crown Pointe Circle, Portage, Mich., received an Ed.D. degree in educational leadership. The title of her dissertation was "A Study of Parental Characteristics and School Choice."

Michael Francis Paskewicz of 1483 Bayview Drive, Lake Zurich, Ill., received an Ed.D. degree in educational leadership. The title of his dissertation was "A Case Study of the Effects of the Strategic Planning Process on the Trust Level of Administrative Staff in a K-12 School District."

Jeffrey Lynn Watts of 1608 Whitby Ave., Portage, Mich., earned a Ph.D. in biological sciences. The title of his dissertation was "Identification and Classification of Coryneform Bacteria Isolated From Bovine Mammary Glands."
