Foreign languages and literatures students receive awards

KALAMAZOO -- Fifty-six Western Michigan University students (listed below) were honored for achievement this spring by the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures. The department awarded scholarships totaling more than $43,000 at its Honors and Awards Day in April, an annual celebration that recognizes the achievements of outstanding students of foreign languages and literatures.

Jason Albaugh of 7700 Bouman Drive, Middleville, Mich., was awarded the $100 Praemium Octavianum, an award given to an outstanding student studying Latin or Greek. Albaugh is a member of the WMU's Lee Honors College.

Benjamin Alt of 404 Wetmore, Howell, Mich., was awarded a $1,000 Mathilde Steckelberg Scholarship in German, an award given to a foreign language major who demonstrates outstanding academic performance and potential.

Brian Becker of 10916 Virginia Ave., Kansas City, Mo, was awarded a $1,000 Mathilde Steckelberg Scholarship in Latin, an award given to a foreign language student who demonstrates outstanding academic performance and potential.

Matthew Bourbina of 1361 E. Hurd Road, Monroe, Mich., was awarded a $750 Department Travel/Study Abroad Award to pursue his studies in French. Bourbina is a member of the WMU's Lee Honors College.

Michael Bourbina, Jr. of 1361 E. Hurd Road, Monroe, Mich., was awarded a $2,000 President's Scholarship for Study Abroad, an award given to a foreign language major to study abroad for at least one semester. To receive the award, Bourbina, who is a member of the WMU's Lee Honors College, was required to have a minimum 3.0 overall grade point average and a 3.50 GPA in his French major.

Dylan Clark of 2860 Trailwood Drive, Rochester, Mich., was awarded a $1,000 Mathilde Steckelberg Scholarship in Spanish, an award given to a foreign language major who demonstrates outstanding academic performance and potential. Clark is a member of the WMU's Lee Honors College.

Alicia Dacoba of 827 South LaGrave, Paw Paw, Mich., was awarded the Premio Suzanne M. Wheatley, named in honor of a WMU Spanish major killed in a 1988 accident and awarded to a student on the basis of academic performance and an interest in traveling to Spain. Dacoba is a member of the WMU's Lee Honors College.

Melissa DaPra, Ironwood, Mich., was awarded the Premio María Moliner, an award given to a student for excellence in the study of Spanish language and literature.

Samantha Giglio of 1940 Howard St., Kalamazoo, was awarded the Premio Alfonso X el Sabio, an award given to a student who demonstrates overall excellence in the study of Spanish language and literature.

Anne Godwin of 4349 Persimmon, Saginaw, Mich., was awarded the Frances E. Noble Prize for Excellence in French, an award given to the student with the highest grade point average in French among graduating French majors. Godwin is a member of the WMU's Lee Honors College.

Megan Gruber of 118 Quinn St., Caro, Mich., was awarded the Premio Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, an award given to a student to recognize excellence in the study of Spanish language and literature.

Matthew Hargis of 33284 Sebastian Lane Drive, Sterling Heights, Mich, was awarded the
Excellence in Italian Award, given to a student for academic achievement in first-year Italian.

Tara Hawkins of13561 Redbird Lane, Grand Haven, Mich., was awarded a $2,000 President's Scholarship for Study Abroad, an award given to a foreign language major to study abroad for at least one semester. To receive the award, Hawkins was required to have a minimum 3.0 overall grade point average and a 3.50 GPA in her Spanish major. Hawkins, who is a member of the WMU's Lee Honors College, also received a $1,200 Ruth Y. Kirby Scholarship Award in Spanish. The award provides financial assistance for Spanish majors and was made possible through a donation by the late Kirby, who taught Spanish in the Kalamazoo community.

Nathan Henrion, Kalamazoo, was awarded the Special Russian Club Award for his outstanding service to the Western Michigan University Russian program.

Rachel Herp of 2244 Jurgess Road, Bad Axe, Mich., was awarded the Margaret H. Brooks Award for Study in France, an award given to an exemplary student of French to continue his or her language studies. Herp is a member of the WMU's Lee Honors College.

Sarah Hodge of 119 Frances Drive, Battle Creek, Mich., received the Prix de l'Alliance Française, an award given to a student who demonstrates exemplary student involvement in French activities.

Daniel Hopkins of 315 Richland Heights, Holland, Mich., was awarded a $1,200 Ruth Y. Kirby Scholarship Award in Spanish. The award provides financial assistance for Spanish majors and was made possible through a donation by the late Kirby, who taught Spanish in the Kalamazoo community.

Carla Howe of 44237 Webster Road, Canton, Mich., was awarded the Premio Rosalia de Castro, an award given to a student who demonstrates overall excellence in the study of Spanish language and literature. Howe is a member of the WMU's Lee Honors College.

Angelique Hughes of 1234 Player Drive, Troy, Mich., was awarded a $2,000 President's Scholarship for Study Abroad, an award given to a foreign language major to study abroad for at least one semester. To receive the award, Hughes, who is a member of the WMU's Lee Honors College, was required to have a minimum 3.0 overall grade point average and a 3.50 GPA in her Spanish major.

Mandy Jacobs of 9640 Prairie Court, Alto, Mich., was awarded a $1,200 Ruth Y. Kirby Scholarship Award in Spanish, an award that provides financial assistance for Spanish majors and made possible through a donation by the late Kirby, who taught Spanish in the Kalamazoo community. Jacobs is a member of the WMU's Lee Honors College.

Susan Jarvis of 54333 CR-657, Paw Paw, Mich., was awarded the Premio Antonio de Nebrija, an award given to a student who demonstrates overall excellence in the study of Spanish language and literature.

Ryan Kamerad of 1319 Lafayette St., Kalamazoo, was awarded the Premio Jorge Luis Borges, an award given to a student who demonstrates overall excellence in the study of the Spanish language. Kamerad is a member of the WMU's Lee Honors College.

Christine Kiel of 2308 Prosperity Drive, Portage, Mich., was awarded a $1,200 Ruth Y. Kirby Scholarship Award in Spanish. The award provides financial assistance for Spanish majors and was made possible through a donation by the late Kirby, who taught Spanish in the Kalamazoo community.

Jamie Legato of 46493 Kramer Drive, Shelby Township, Mich., was awarded a $750 Department Travel/Study Abroad Award to pursue his studies in Spanish.

Jamie Longhurst, 14780 28 Mile Road, Albion, Mich., was awarded a $2,000 President's Scholarship for Study Abroad, an award given to a foreign language major to study abroad for at least one semester. To receive the award, Longhurst, who is a member of the WMU's Lee Honors College, was required to have a minimum 3.0 overall grade point average and a 3.50 GPA in her Spanish major.

Lisa Lopiccolo of 44373 Ausable, Clinton Township, Mich., was awarded a $1,200 Ruth Y. Kirby Scholarship Award in Spanish. The award provides financial assistance for Spanish majors and was made possible through a donation by the late Kirby, who taught Spanish in the Kalamazoo community. Lopiccolo, who is a member of the WMU's Lee Honors College, also received a $750 Department Travel/Study Abroad Award to acknowledge her exemplary dedication to Spanish studies and to further her pursuit of those studies in a foreign country.

Kristin Lukasik of 43017 Fernwood, Canton, Mich., was awarded a $2,000 President's Scholarship for Study Abroad, an award given to a foreign language major to study abroad for at least one semester. To receive the award, Lukasik, who is a member of the WMU's Lee Honors College, was required to have a minimum 3.0 overall grade point average and a 3.50 GPA in her Spanish major.

Jessica Lynam of 2109 Gibbs Road, Traverse City, Mich., was chosen as the Western Michigan University Presidential Scholar in Foreign Languages and Literatures, a University distinction awarded to students who demonstrate the most outstanding classroom performance. An exemplary student of both German and Spanish, Lynam also was the first recipient of the $1,500 Lori Beth Pattison Scholarship for Literature in Spanish, an award named in honor of a WMU alumna and professor of Spanish who died of cancer in 1999.

Wilfredo Valentín-Márquez of 460 Main St., Battle Creek, Mich., was awarded the Excellence in Italian Award, an award given to a student in recognition of academic achievement in second-year Italian.

Kate McCarthy of 2045 Lamont, Grand Rapids, Mich., was awarded the Premio Octavio Paz, an award given to a student who demonstrates overall excellence in the study of Spanish language and literature. McCarthy is a member of the WMU's Lee Honors College.

Kate Menkveld of 1510 Portage St., Kalamazoo, was awarded a $1,500 Hermann E. Rothfuss Award for Excellence in German, an award given to a student who demonstrates outstand-ing academic performance in the study of German language. Menkveld also received a $750 Department Travel/Study Abroad Award to pursue her studies in German.

Megan Merrifield of 1058 Ivanhoe, Muskegon, Mich., was awarded the Margaret H. Brooks Award for Study in France, an award given to an exemplary student of French to continue his or her language studies. Merrifield is a member of the WMU's Lee Honors College.

Naomi Millán of 19070 Melrose Avenue, Southfield, Mich., was awarded the John B. Dorstewitz Award in French named in honor of a WMU French major who died in an 1997 accident and given to a student who demonstrates excellence in the study of French. Millán is a member of the WMU's Lee Honors College.

Jennifer Miller of 316 N. Simons St., Cadillac, Mich., was awarded a $2,000 President's Scholarship for Study Abroad, an award given to a foreign language major to study abroad for at least one semester. To receive the award, Miller was required to have a minimum 3.0 overall grade point average and a 3.50 GPA in her Spanish major.

Dylan Miner of 224 West Sherman, Caro, Mich., was awarded a $1,200 Ruth Y. Kirby Scholarship Award in Spanish. The award provides financial assistance for Spanish majors and was made possible through a donation by the late Kirby, who taught Spanish in the Kalamazoo community.

Jennifer Morgan of 22648 44th Ave., Mattawan, Mich., was awarded a $1,200 Ruth Y. Kirby Scholarship Award in Spanish. The award provides financial assistance for Spanish majors and was made possible through a donation by the late Kirby, who taught Spanish in the Kalamazoo community.

Bonnie Oven of 14600 Beech Road, Brooklyn, Mich., was awarded a $1,200 Ruth Y. Kirby Scholarship Award in Spanish, an award that provides financial assistance for Spanish majors and made possible through a donation by the late Kirby, who taught Spanish in the Kalamazoo community.

Julie Pabian of 35179 Banbury, Livonia, Mich., was awarded an Excellence in Russian Award, an award given to a student for exemplary academic achievement in his or her study of first-year Russian language.

Melissa Pavy of 4291 Northville Road, Plymouth, Mich., was awarded a $2,000 President's Scholarship for Study Abroad, an award given to a foreign language major to study abroad for at least one semester. To receive the award, Pavy was required to have a minimum 3.0 overall grade point average and a 3.50 GPA in her Russian minor. Pavy also was awarded the Excellence in Russian Award, given to a student for exemplary academic achievement in his or her study of second-year Russian language.

Zoe Sias-Penrod of 304 W. Emerson, Kalamazoo, was awarded a $500 Herb B. Jones Scholarship in Spanish, an award given to a student who demonstrates overall excellence in written and spoken Spanish.

Christine Pepin of 704 Heathermoor Drive, Midland, Mich., was awarded the Preis der Bundesrepublik, an award given to a student who exhibits outstanding work in the study of German. Pepin is a member of the WMU's Lee Honors College.

Dawn Pinkston of 1712 Wintergreen Court, Crown Point, Ind., was awarded the Prix d'Honneur de l'Ambassadeur de France, an award given by the French Embassy to the outstanding student of French in the graduating class.

Dorothy Porter of 223 Elm St., Kalamazoo, was awarded the $100 Victor Coutant Award in Classics, an award given to an outstanding student studying Latin or Greek.

María Rodríguez of 59509 42nd St., Paw Paw, Mich., was awarded the Premio Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, an award given to a student who demonstrates overall excellence in the study of Spanish language and literature.

Erica Rosalik of 4181 Cambridge Crescent, Troy, Mich., was awarded an Exchange Program scholarship to the Free University of Berlin to pursue her studies of German language and literature. Rosalik is a member of the WMU's Lee Honors College.

Gregory Schultz of 9920 Springwood Drive, Kalamazoo, was awarded a $2,000 President's Scholarship for Study Abroad, an award given to a foreign language major to study abroad for at least one semester. To receive the award, Schultz was required to have a minimum 3.0 overall grade point average and a 3.50 GPA in his French major.

Dominic Siciliano of 1323 Greenwood, Kalamazoo, was awarded the Prix de l'Alliance Française, an award given to a student who exhibits exemplary student involvement in French activities.

Amy Slagle of 5429 Meredith, Portage, Mich., was awarded the Excellence in Russian Award, given to a student for exemplary academic achievement in his or her study of third-year Russian language.

Ieva Sverns of 4016 Laird, Kalamazoo, was awarded an Excellence in Russian Award, an award given to student for exemplary academic achievement in his or her study of first-year Russian language.

Joy Talkington of 1701 First St., NE., Mandan, N.D., was awarded a $2,000 President's Scholarship for Study Abroad, an award given to a foreign language major to study abroad for at least one semester. To receive the award, Talkington, who is a member of the WMU's Lee Honors College, was required to have a minimum 3.0 overall grade point average and a 3.50 GPA in her Spanish major.

Corey Thompson of 1282 11th Ave., Martin, Mich., was awarded the $2,500 President's Award for Study Abroad, an award given to a foreign language major to study abroad for at least one semester. To receive the award, Thompson, who is an exemplary student of both French and Spanish, was required to have a minimum 3.0 overall grade point average and a 3.75 GPA in his French major.

Mary Truitt of 688 Pierce Road, Plainwell, Mich., was awarded a $1,000 Mathilde Steckelberg Scholarship in French, an award given to a foreign language major who demonstrates outstanding academic performance and potential. Truitt is a member of the WMU's Lee Honors College.

Benjamin Tyrybon of 898 Sixth St., Wyandotte, Mich., was awarded the Premio Joan Coromines, an award given to a student who demonstrates exemplary academic achievement in the study of Spanish language and literature.

Jack VanEngen of 48577 Woodhenge, Mattawan, Mich., was awarded a $2,000 President's Scholarship for Study Abroad, an award given to a foreign language major to study abroad for at least one semester. To receive the award, VanEngen was required to have a minimum 3.0 overall grade point average and a 3.50 GPA in his Spanish major and German minor.
