Gary Fund surpasses record goal

June 13, 2000

KALAMAZOO -- Bronco student-athletes and Western Michigan University's 20 varsity sports are the beneficiaries of another record-setting campaign for the Mike Gary Athletic Fund.

With two weeks remaining in the 1999-2000 fiscal year, the Gary Fund has raised $652,000 in gifts and pledges, surpassing the $630,000 goal. Much of this year's total was raised by 40 volunteers, who solicited contributions by phone and personal contact in April and May. Larry Lueth, senior vice president and manager at National City Corporation, Kalamazoo, chaired the campaign. He was assisted by chair-elect Gitta Kudlicki of the Kalamazoo Convention and Visitors Bureau, who will oversee the operation next year.

"We are very appreciative of the support we've received from the community and from the university," says Jerry George, director of development for intercollegiate athletics. "Much credit goes to the hard work of the volunteers and all those involved in this drive."

The Gary Fund was created in 1956 to provide private support to Bronco athletics. Proceeds are used to provide scholarships, travel support and equipment needs. Questions may be directed to Jerry George at 616 387-3057 or <jerry.george@wmich.edu>.
