Seven recruits signed to men's track teamAug. 28, 2000 KALAMAZOO -- The Western Michigan University men's track and field team has signed seven student-athletes to National Letters of Intent for the 2001 indoor and outdoor seasons. The incoming class will be counted on to contribute right away, as the Broncos finished just eight points shy of a Mid-American Conference Championship last spring. "I think we have strengthened our team a good deal with this class, we've addressed areas of concern and added depth in other areas," says head coach Jack Shaw. "We're hoping some of these kids can make an impact in the near future." Below are biographical capsules on the 2001 recruiting class. Dante Daniels, sprints, Waukegan, Ill. (Gurnee HS) State champion in the 200 meters at the 1999 Illinois Class AA meet. Placed seventh in the 200 at the 2000 state championships. Personal best times are 10.6 for 100 meters and 21.94 for 200 meters. Jason Evelyn, jumps, Whitby, Ont. (Father Leo J. Austin HS) Reigning Canadian Junior Champion in the triple jump (49'-8") and member of the junior national team. Third in the triple jump at the 1999 Junior Nationals. Won the triple jump competition at the 2000 Ontario provincial championships. Tom Maczik (pronounced: MOC-zik), throws, Reese, Mich. (Reese HS) Double state champion at the 2000 meet, taking home the Division 3 shot put and discus titles. Won the shot put at the 2000 Michigan Interscholastic Track Coaches Association (MITCA) Indoor State Championship. Recorded the 10 longest discus throws in the state last season, highlighted by an effort of 186'-7". Personal best shot put of 61'-11.75" was tops in Michigan. Andy McKalips, distance, Goshen, Ind. (Goshen HS) Will run cross country at WMU. Finished 12th at the 1999 state cross country meet in a time of 16:10.6. Logged personal-best 5K time of 16:00 at the state semifinals. Clocked a P.R. of 4:20.0 in the 1,600 meters at the 2000 regional. Nick Schaibly (pronounced: SHY-blee), pole vault, Haslett, Mich. (Haslett HS) Captured the Division 2 state pole vault title after finishing third as a junior. Owns a personal-best pole vault mark of 15'-6". Played quarterback position on Haslett's state runner-up football team and was a forward on the state runner-up basketball squad. Tom Torchia (pronounced: TOR-sha), javelin, Shaler, Pa. (Shaler Area HS) Finished sixth in the javelin (184'-8") at the 2000 Class AAA state championships. Personal best javelin toss is 197'-0" * three-sport athlete who also played football and wrestled. Clark Wilson, throws, Mount Prospect, Ill (Prospect HS) Class AA state champion in the discus (190'-1") and runner-up in the shot put (61'-1.75") at the 2000 meet. Placed second in the shot put and third in the discus at the 1999 state meet. Finished fifth in the discus and seventh in the shot at the prestigious Golden West Invitational. Owns the sixth-best discus throw (190'-1") and the 13th-best shot put (62'-3.5") in Illinois prep history.
