
Hockey Broncos split pair on nonconference matches

KALAMAZOO -- Western Michigan University's hockey team improved
to 2-1-1 on its young season with a 4-3 victory over Alabama-Hunstville
on Saturday (Oct. 21). The match was played before 1,927 fans
at Lawson Arena on WMU Homecoming.
In their season home opener on Friday (Oct. 20), the Broncos
dropped a 6-5 overtime decision to Alabama in nonconference competition.
WMU is 1-0-1 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association with
a win and a tie at Alaska-Fairbanks one week ago.
More than 2,200 fans watched Friday night's scoring spree.
Western scored first and led, 2-1, after one period, but fell
behind, 4-3, at the second intermission. Trailing 5-3 in the
final period of regulation, the Broncos scored two goals in a
span of 22 seconds to knot the score, 5-5, and send the contest
to overtime. Scoring for WMU on Friday were Brent Mills, Mark
Wilkinson, Jeff Campbell, Shaun Rose and Dana Lattery.
David Gove scored two of the Broncos' four goals in Saturday's
4-3 victory, including the game winner with just 26.5 seconds
remaining in the contest. Gove leads WMU with six goals for the
season. Campbell and Bryan Farquhar also scored in the win.
Alabama-Huntsville (3-1-0) came to Kalamazoo following back-to-back
shutouts of Bowling Green the previous weekend. The Broncos handed
the UAH Chargers their first loss of the season.
Western Michigan returns to CCHA action on Friday and Saturday,
Oct. 27-28, with a pair of home matches against Lake Superior
State. Faceoff both nights is 7 p.m.
