
Carey, Martell, other appointments approved

KALAMAZOO -- The appointments of Dr. Thomas A. Carey as chairperson
of the Department of Management and Dr. John E. Martell Jr. as
assistant dean of the Lee Honors College were approved at the
Dec. 8 meeting of the WMU Board of Trustees.
In related action, the board also approved the appointment
of Dr. W. Bryan Stauffer as interim director of the Sindecuse
Health Center, effective Nov. 27.
Carey, a WMU faculty member since 1974, will take the reins
of the Department of Management on Jan. 1. During his tenure
at WMU, he has been the recipient of several teaching awards
and he has been honored by the Michigan Association of Governing
Boards of State Universities. He also has been the long-time
editor of an award-winning management newsletter. Carey earned
a bachelor's degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1969
and master's and doctoral degrees from WMU in 1973 and 1975,
respectively.
He replaces Dr. Daniel J. Farrell, whose return to the faculty
and six-month administrative leave also were approved by trustees
at the meeting.
Martell has been assistant to the dean of the Lee Honors College
since 1988. His new post as assistant dean became effective Oct.
23. Martell, who has been at WMU since 1970, has been an academic
advisor in the College of Arts and Sciences and also taught social
science in what was the College of General Studies. He earned
bachelor's and master's degrees from WMU in 1965 and 1966, respectively,
and a doctoral degree from the University of Michigan in 1981.
Stauffer has been a staff physician at the Sindecuse Health
Center since 1993. A 1968 graduate of the University of Maryland
School of Medicine, Stauffer was in private practice in Kalamazoo
as a pediatrician before joining the University staff. He is
an active member of the medical staffs of both Bronson Methodist
Hospital and Borgess Medical Center.
Stauffer replaces Dr. Diane Berty, whose resignation, effective
Nov. 7, also was accepted by the board during its meeting.
In related matters, the board also approved a return to the
faculty, effective Nov. 27, for Dr. Tracey Mabrey, who had been
serving as interim director of the School of Social Work. The
board also gave its approval for a change of department affiliation
for Dr. Norman M. Kiracofe, who is going from the University
Counseling and Testing Center to the Department of Counseling
Education and Counseling Psychology, effective Jan. 2.
