
Karpus named director of Conference and Seminars

KALAMAZOO -- Janet Karpus has been named director of Conferences
and Seminars in the Division of Continuing Education at Western
Michigan University.
The office provides a variety of events planning and management
services at reasonable rates to educational institutions, nonprofit
agencies, health care providers and other clients around the
world. Its services include developing program objectives and
curricula, arranging facilities, securing speakers and exhibitors,
negotiating fees and contracts, registering participants, handling
marketing and promotion, and managing on-site activities.
Karpus came to WMU from the Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo,
where she was a contracted administrator for special projects.
From 1990 to 2000, she was with the Fontana Concert Society,
a Kalamazoo-based arts organization, and from 1987 to 1990 with
Zingerman's, a nationally known food purveyor based in Ann Arbor,
Mich.
Executive director of Fontana during the last six years of
her tenure there, Karpus was heavily involved in the areas of
program development, fund development, strategic planning and
implementation, marketing, board development, and various collaborative
projects. Her primary responsibilities as catering sales manager
at Zingerman's included sales and special events.
Active in the local arts community, Karpus currently is president
of the Wellspring/Cori Terry & Dancers Board of Directors,
chairperson of the Strategic Planning and Evaluation Committee
of Education for the Arts, and a member of the Education Committee
of the Gilmore International Keyboard Festival. She also serves
on various grant review and assessment panels for nonprofit organizations.
Karpus received a bachelor of music degree from New York's
Potsdam College in 1982 and a master of music degree from WMU
in 1985.
