Golf team announces season award winners
May 17, 2001
KALAMAZOO -- Western Michigan University golf coach Cindy
Trout announced the award winners from the 2000-01 season. Sophomore
Katie Yoder (Fort Wayne, Ind.) was named the team's most valuable
player, while classmate Brooke Hulsbrink (Grand Blanc, Mich.)
was named the team's most improved player.
Yoder was the most consistent player for the Broncos this
past season, shooting only three rounds out of 23 above the 86
mark. She became the first individual medalist in team history
when she placed first at the University of Missouri-Kansas City
Classic on Oct. 24. Yoder earned team medalist honors five times
for the season, and finished first, second, or third on the team
in every event except one. Her scoring average of 81.8 is the
lowest in the three-year history of the program. She led the
team in scoring average, rounds played (23) and tied for the
team lead with six rounds in the 70's. All but one of her 23
rounds counted towards the WMU team score this season. Her 2000-01
average was nearly three strokes lower than her 1999-2000 mark
of 84.5.
Hulsbrink cut 3.2 strokes off of her average from last season
(86.6 to 83.4). She averaged 81.9 in the spring events, which
was the second best mark on the team behind Yoder. She shot the
lowest 18-hole round of the year for the Broncos, a 74 in the
afternoon round of the Notre Dame Invitational on Oct. 14. After
having no rounds in the 70s in her freshman season, Hulsbrink
finished her sophomore year with three rounds below 80. She finished
third on the team in scoring average for the season.
Western Michigan cut more than seven strokes off their 18-hole
team scoring average in 2000-01 (337 in 1999-2000, 329.4 in 2000-01).
They earned the first team championship in school history (University
of Missouri-Kansas City Classic, Oct. 24), and shot 29 strokes
lower at the MAC championships this season (1000 in 1999-2000,
971 in 2000-01). All of the letterwinners from this season will
be back for the 2001-02 season.
