
Tax expert offers advice to businesswomen

KALAMAZOO -- A Southwest Michigan Certified Public Accountant
will discuss tax issues for small businesses at a Western Michigan
University presentation Thursday, Nov. 1.
CPA Gail Shuster of Plante & Moran will present "Tax
and Accounting Issues for Small Businesses" from 6:30 to
8:30 p.m. in the Federal Room of the Kalamazoo County Chamber
of Commerce building, 346 W. Michigan Ave. The program, part
of a monthly series of workshops offered by WMU's Women's Business
Development Center, is free and open to the public.
In her talk, Shuster will discuss such topics as the advantages
and disadvantages of choosing a sole proprietorship, payroll
tax compliance, self employment tax issues, maximizing business
deductions, tax reporting requirements, and retirement plan options.
As an associate with Plante & Moran, Shuster provides
tax planning and consulting for small businesses and families.
She is an instructor for firmwide tax education, serving as the
Kalamazoo office's tax education coordinator. She earned her
bachelor's degree in accounting from WMU and is pursuing a master's
degree in taxation from the Washington State School of Law. Past
president of the Kalamazoo chapter of the National Association
of Career Women, Shuster is a member of the American Institute
of Certified Public Accountants and the Michigan Association
of Certified Public Accountants. She serves on the board of directors
of the Arts Council of Kalamazoo and is an active volunteer with
the Portage Public Schools.
WMU's Haworth College of Business established the Women's
Business Development Center in 1999 to offer support to female
professionals and entrepreneurs through training, group and individual
problem-solving consultation, current business information and
networking opportunities.
