WMU increases security for football games
Oct. 2, 2001
KALAMAZOO -- Western Michigan University officials announced
today that increased security measures will be in place for remaining
home football games this season. The University's increased security
at larger public events is consistent with steps being taken
throughout the country following terrorist attacks Sept. 11.
Some of the increased security measures will directly affect
fans attending:
- Fans are encouraged to arrive early. Expect delays at stadium
entrances.
- Coolers, backpacks, tote bags and duffle bags will not be
permitted in the stadium.
- Purses and other hand bags will be checked by security personnel.
"We have heightened our security awareness to ensure
the safety of fans, teams and game officials," said Dave
Corstange, WMU's senior associate athletic director. "While
we are increasing security measures at the stadium, fans can
expect the same enjoyable and festival atmosphere at Waldo they
have grown accustomed to."
Other security measures include a 30 percent increase in the
number of WMU police officers patrolling the stadium. The air
space over Waldo Stadium has also been declared a no-fly zone
by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
The Broncos' next home contest is this Saturday, Oct. 6, versus
the University of Akron. The game has been designated Southwest
Fest, Family Fest and Education Day. Southwest Fest starts at
3:30 p.m., gates at Waldo open at 4:30 p.m., with kickoff slated
for 6 p.m.
McDonald's stadium concessions will be accepting donations
for the Red Cross.
